Today in rock history Thursday June 30th 1944 – Vocalist Glenn Shorrock of the Little River Band is born in Rochester 1963 – Yngwie Malmsteen is born in Stockholm Sweden 1966 – The Beatles played the first of three concerts at the Nippon Budokan Hall, Japan. 1973 – George Harrison knocked Paul McCartney from the top of the US singles chart with ‘Give Me Love, Give Me Peace On Earth’. His second US No.1, a No.8 hit in the UK. 1974 – Gregg Allman marries Cher four days after her divorce from Sonny Bono. After nine days, Cher announces she wants another divorce. They separate and divorce about 3 1/2 years later. 1989 – The surviving Beatles sue for an injunction against Dave Clark, formerly of the Dave Clark Five, banning him from selling copies of the old Ready Steady Go! TV show featuring the Beatles. The case is later settled out of court. 1990 – Pink Floyd headline the Knebworth festival 1994 – Virgin Records rushes the Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge into stores early after the album is played on the radio. 1996 – Neil Young premieres his album, “Broken Arrow” via the Internet. The album is slated for release on July 2, two days after its technologically advanced premiere. 1999 – Eric Clapton performs a benefit concert at Madison Square Garden for his Crossroads rehab center in Antigua. His guests include Sheryl Crow, Mary J. Blige, and Bob Dylan. 2004 – Kinks founder member Dave Davies was left paralysed on the right-hand side of his body after suffering a stroke. The 57-year-old guitarist and brother of fellow Kinks star Ray Davies had been promoting his solo material when he collapsed. 2004 – David Bowie cancels the remainder of his Reality tour after suffering a pinched nerve in his shoulder. 2013 – Lou Reed was rushed to a Long Island hospital! Reed, who recently received a liver transplant, reportedly had been sick to his stomach a number of times and there were concerns that his body might be rejecting the new organ.

1948 – Drummer Ian Paice of Deep Purple is born in Nottingham 1953 – Don Dokken is born this day 1956 – In a step back for rock, Elvis Presley appears on Steve Allen’s TV show to sing “Hound Dog” to an actual basset hound. 1957 – Buddy Holly records “Peggy Sue.” 1964 – Touring Australia The Beatles played two shows at the Festival Hall, Brisbane. Over 8,000 fans had waited until after midnight to greet the group as they landed at Brisbane Airport. 1966 – Some 500 police are needed to contain the crowd when the Beatles play Tokyo. 1967 – Two days after Mick Jagger is found guilty of drug possession and jailed, Keith Richards goes on trial for similar charges stemming from a February raid on his home. Judge Leslie Block finds him guilty of allowing his house to be used for smoking cannabis and sentences him to a year in jail. Jagger is sentenced to three months in jail. Their sentences are later suspended following a public outcry. 1968 – Pink Floyd release A Saucerful of Secrets. The Floyd celebrate by performing a free show in London’s Hyde Park with Jethro Tull, Roy Harper, and T. Rex. 1968 – A free concert was held in London’s Hyde Park with Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, Tyrannosaurus Rex and Roy Harper. 1969 – The Jimi Hendrix Experience play their last concert together at the Denver Pop Festival in Mile High Stadium. 1973 – Ian Gillan leaves Deep Purple after a show in Japan. 1974 – There’s a change in the lineup of future Canadian prog superstars Rush as Neil Peart replaces John Rustey on the drum stool today. Neil is considered by some to be one of the best drummers or the Rock era. 1975 – In Oakland, Calif., Elton John joins the Doobie Brothers on stage to duet on “Listen to the Music.” 1975 – Tim Buckley dies of a heart attack at the age of 28. 1978 – Peter Frampton suffers a broken arm and cracked ribs in an auto wreck in the Bahamas. 1979 – Born on this day, Tim McCord, bass, Evanescence 1985 – John Lennon’s 1965 Rolls-Royce Phantom V limousine, with psychedelic paintwork, sold for a record sum of $3,006,385, (£1,768,462) at a Sotheby’s auction in New York. 1988 – Nirvana, Mudhoney and Tad all appeared at the Moore Theatre, Seattle. 1993 – Aerosmith release their much-loved single “Cryin’.” 1996 – Record producer George Martin received a Knighthood, also music promoter Harvey Goldsmith became an MBE and Van Morrison an OBE. 2000 – Vandals pull Ronnie Van Zant’s casket out of the Lynyrd Skynyrd mausoleum, but are unable to open it. Steve Gaines’ ashes are also spilled during the rampage. 2000 – Rolling Stone Ron Wood checks into a rehab center to treat alcohol addiction. It’s believed Wood is hoping to dry out in time for a Rolling Stones world tour. 2004 – Courtney Love was reprimanded by Los Angeles Judge Melissa Jackson for turning up five hours late to a hearing. Love pleaded guilty to a single charge of disorderly conduct and was given a discharge, on condition she paid the victim’s medical bills, joins a drug programme and stayed out of trouble.

1942 – Procul Harum drummer Bobby Harrison is born today 1977 – Elton John achieved a life long ambition when he became the Chairman of Watford Football Club. 1978 – The Clash supported by The Specials appeared at Friars, Aylesbury, 1980 – Roxy Music scored their second UK No.1 album with ‘Flesh And Blood’. 1983 – David Bowie appeared at The Murrayfield Stadium, Edinburgh, on his Serious Moonlight tour. 1990 – Over 200 women filed court actions against Chuck Berry after it was alleged that he had been secretly filming them in the rest rooms of the restaurant he owned. 1991 – “Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Oratorio” debuts at Liverpool’s Anglican Cathedral. McCartney co-writes the 90-minute work with American-born composer Carl Davis to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Liverpool’s Royal Philharmonic. 1993 – The Manic Street Preachers played a sold out gig at the Marquee Club, London. 1996 – Def Leppard kicked off the North American leg of their 133-date Slang world tour at The Blossom Music Centre, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. 1997 – Radiohead went to No.1 on the UK album chart with their third album ‘OK Computer’. 1997 – The classic Pink Floyd album ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ spent its 1056th week on the US album chart. 2000 – Chris Cornell, former lead singer of Seattle’s Soundgarden, and his wife, artist manager Susan Silver, become parents of a baby daughter when Lillian Jean is born. 2001 – Phish and the Grateful Dead are the big winners at the second annual Jammy Awards, held at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.

Fans are irate over the ridiculous name. 2004 – UK prog rockers Muse play the biggest show of their careers when they headline the Sunday night at Glastonbury Festival. 2005 – Nine Inch Nails close the Coachella Festival in California. 2008 – Total Guitar magazine voted Celine Dion’s rendition of the AC/DC track ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ as the world’s worst cover version ever, the magazines editor Stephen Lawson said Dion’s cover was “sacrilege”.

1946 – Ian McDonald of Foreigner is born in London. 1954 – David Paich of Toto is born. 1966 – The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Love, Captain Beefheart, The Lovin Spoonful and Percy Sledge all appeared at The Hollywood Bowl, 1967 – During a north American tour The Jimi Hendrix Experience gave a free afternoon concert in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco. They then played another two shows that evening at the Fillmore West. 1967 – The Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” is recorded live during a British TV broadcast. 1969 – Guitarist Mick Taylor makes his performance debut with the Rolling Stones in Rome. 1983 – The Police scored their fourth UK No.1 album with ‘Synchronicity’, 1988 – Hillel Slovak original guitarist and founding member of The Red Hot Chili Peppers died from a heroin overdose shortly after the band returned from a European tour. 1988 – Van Halen started a four-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘OU812′. 1994 – Stone Temple Pilots started a three-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Purple’. 1995 – Pink Floyd were at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Pulse’ the bands fifth US No.1. 1995 – Pearl Jam cancels their current tour, citing their ongoing war with Ticketmaster as the reason. 2005 – Tickets for a forthcoming Rolling Stones gig at the Hollywood Bowl were set to become the most expensive in rock ‘n’ roll history. Fans would have to pay up to £249 for a seat – £2 per minute to watch the Stones.

1940 – Stuart Sutcliffe, the fifth Beatle and one of the world’s worst bass players, is born in Edinburgh, Scotland. 1965 – The Yardbirds appeared at The City Hall, Salisbury, England, admission 10 shillings, ($1.40). 1966 – The Beatles fly to Germany, where they will begin their last world tour. The Rolling Stones depart London the same day to begin a tour of America. 1967 – John Entwistle bass player from The Who married Alison Wise. 1973 – George Harrison started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Living In The Material World’, his second US No.1. 1975 – Jefferson Starship release Red Octopus. Rolling Stone celebrates Marty Balin’s return to the fold by saying, “If it weren’t for Balin, Red Octopus would be completely unlistenable.” 1975 – Alice Cooper falls from stage at a Vancouver, British Columbia, concert, breaking six ribs. 1977 – A very inebriated Keith Moon joins Led Zeppelin onstage in Los Angeles. 1979 – The No. 1 album in the U.S. is Supertramp’s Breakfast in America. 1979 – The Knack release “My Sharona.” 1981 – Guitarist Robert Fripp re-forms King Crimson with Bill Bruford, Adrian Belew, and Tony Levin. 1984 – Van Halen release the all-time driving classic “Panama.” 1994 – A daughter, Francesca is born in Tarzana, Calif., to Gilby and Daniella Clarke. After the Turtles disband in 1970, he and bandmate Mark Volman join Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention 1948 – Todd Rundgren is born in Upper Darby, Pa. 1959 – Chuck Berry enters US chart with Back in the USA. 1961 – At a recording session in Hamburg, the Beatles lay down “Ain’t She Sweet,” “Cry for a Shadow,” “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “Why,” “Nobody’s Child,” and “My Bonnie.” 1975 – At New York’s Madison Square Garden, Eric Clapton joins the Rolling Stones onstage to jam on “Sympathy for the Devil.” 1979 – Mick Taylor (who once referred to himself as ‘The only person to quit the Rolling Stones and live’!) releases first solo LP. 1981 – Mark Chapman pleads guilty to the murder of John Lennon and is sentenced to 20 years in jail. 1991 – Jimi Hendrix’s lyrics to “Room Full of Mirrors” sell for $35,200 at a New York auction. 1992 – Tom Jones is joined during his performance at London’s Town & Country Club by Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour. 1993 – Ozzy Osbourne changes his mind yet again about retirement and says he will reunite with Black Sabbath for a tour. 1995 – R.E.M. perform “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” with Dan Rather at a sound check in New York. 2005 – Coldplay’s X&Y stays atop the American album chart for a second week. He’s hoping to recoup legal fees from a copyright battle with the other members of Creedence Clearwater Revival. 1998 – Charlie Daniels wins the Harry Hap Peebles Lifetime Achievement Award, presented by the International Entertainment Buyers Association at the organization’s annual conference in Nashville. 2000 – 39 year-old Karen McNeil who claimed she was the wife of Axl Rose and that she communicated with him telepathically was jailed for one year for stalking the singer. 2001 – Bluesman John Lee Hooker, believed to be 83, dies of natural causes at his home in Los Altos, Calif 2002 – New York radio station WPLJ-FM debuts the title track from Bruce Springsteen’s forthcoming album “The Rising” only to be immediately served with a cease and desist order from the Boss’ label, Columbia. 2003 – Kicking off their first world tour in four years in Holland, R.E.M. debut new songs “Bad Day” and “In Time.” 2003 – U2 and The Corrs perform at the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics, held in Croke Park, Dublin, Ireland. 2005 – Billy Corgan takes out full-page advertisements in two newspapers announcing that he wants to reform the Smashing Pumpkins. “I want my band back, and my songs, and my dreams,” he says.

At the time it’s the largest fee ever for a concert appearance. 1974 – Van Morrison, The Allman Brothers, The Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tim Buckley, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band and The Doobie Brothers all appeared at Knebworth Park, Stevenage, England. A special PA system was used for the event, claiming to be the best ever for an outside show, weighing 12 tons and needing five technicians. 1980 – During a UK tour Fleetwood Mac played the first of six sold-out nights at Wembley Arena, London, 1986 – Phil Collins, Dire Straits, Tina Turner and Elton John all appeared at the fourth annual ‘Prince’s Trust Rock Gala’ held in London. 1987 – Boston appear at the 10th annual Texas Jam for their first live performance in eight years. 1987 – Aerosmith appeared at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas, the first night on their Permanent Vacation 147 date world tour. 1994 – It’s reported that Paul, George, and Ringo are working on a new song for inclusion in the Anthology boxed set. 1994 – The Rolling Stones begin rehearsing in Toronto for their Voodoo Lounge live extravaganza. 1998 – Black Sabbath, Foo Fighters, Korn, Pantera, Soulfly, Slayer, Fear Factory, Coal Chamber, Life of Agony, Limp Bizkit, Entombed, Human Waste Project, Neurosis, and Pitchshifter all appeared at Ozzfest, Milton Keynes Bowl, 2004 – In St. Petersburg’s Palace Square, Paul Mccartney plays his 3000 gig since first performing with the Quarrymen. 50,000 Russians turn out to see the ex-Beatle, who predictably plays “Back in the USSR.”

1950 – Ann Wilson of Heart is born in San Diego 1963 – Drummer Simon Wright (AC/DC, Dio) is born. 1965 – The Kinks and the Moody Blues both play their first American date at New York’s Academy of Music. 1965 – The Rolling Stones score their first #1 on the American charts with “Satisfaction”. 1967 – Paul McCartney tells a British television audience that he has taken LSD. 1971 – Almost exactly a year to the day after the appearance of ‘Gasoline Alley’, Rod Stewart releases his self-produced masterpiece, ‘Every Picture Tells a Story. 1977 – Led Zeppelin play a one-off show in San Diego between six gigs in New York and six gigs in Los Angeles. Jimmy Page is apparently so out of it from his heroin habit that he has to be physically carried onto the plane to California. 1982 – Asia live up to their “supergroup” tag when their self-titled debut tops the albums chart. 1982 – Rainbow hits #40 with “Stone Cold 1984 – Tickets for Bruce Springsteen’s 10-night stand at New Jersey’s Meadowlands go on sale. Twenty-four hours later, 202,000 tickets have been snatched up. 1988 – Anthrax’s Danny Spitz marries fiancee Valerie. 2000 – There’s a new addition to Bob Dylan’s group today in Portland, Ore. It’s Professor Patrick Ladd, who signs Dylan’s lyrics for the benefit of the hard of hearing. 2003 – The opening date of the Lollapalooza tour – featuring Audioslave and Queens of the Stone Age – is cancelled because organizers say Jane’s Addiction’s stage won’t fit the Ionia County Fairgrounds venue in Michigan. 2005 – Richard Ashcroft, formerly a singer with “Bittersweet Symphony” hit-makers The Verve, is arrested in Chippenham, England after barging into a youth club and demanding to work with the children. Other tour stops include Detroit and Los Angeles. 2002 – U2 lost a bid to prevent the demolition of Hanover Quay studio in Dublin. 2011 - Clarence Clemons dies at the age of 69.

1941 – Singer Nilsson (Harry Edward Nelson III) is born in Brooklyn, N.Y. 1943 – Muff Winwood of The Spencer Davis Group is born 1949 – Russell Hitchcock of Air Supply is born in Melbourne, Australia. 1951 – Born on this day, Steve Walsh, Kansas 1964 – The Beatles touring Australia played two sets at the Festival Hall, Melbourne 1964 – The Rolling Stones paid £1,500 ($2,500) in return air fares from America back to the UK to honour a booking made a year earlier for £100 ($170) at Magdalen College Oxford. 1965 – Bob Dylan recorded what would be his first ‘electric’ hit, ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ which peaked at No.2 in the US and No.4 on the UK singles chart. 1965 – The Rolling Stones kicked off an 8-date mini-European tour at The Odeon Theatre in Glasgow, Scotland, supported by The Hollies. 1967 – Guitarist Peter Green quit the John Mayall Band. The Pistols performed ‘Anarchy In The UK’ outside The Houses Of Parliament resulting in members from the party being arrested when the boat docked later that day. 1985 – Dire Straits started a nine-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with, ‘Brothers In Arms’. 1986 – U2 and Sting headlined a concert in New Jersey celebrating 25 years of Amnesty International. 1988 – During Bruce Springsteen’s stay in Rome during a world tour a photographer took a shot of Bruce in his underpants sharing an intimate moment with his backing singer Patti Scialfa. The picture confirmed the rumours that Bruce and Patti were having an affair. 1989 – Nirvana’s debut album ‘Bleach’ was released in the US. The title for the album came from a poster ‘Bleach Your Works’ urging drug users to bleach their needles. 1999 – “No Boundaries,” a compilation album created for the benefit of the refugees of Kosovo, is released by Epic Records. The 16-track set features rare, live and previously unreleased special versions of songs by an array of musicians, including Pearl Jam, Alanis Morissette, Neil Young, Rage Against the Machine, Oasis, Korn, and others. 2002 – A rare autographed copy of The Beatles’ album Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band sold at auction for £34,000 ($57,800), more than five times the estimated price. 2003 – Metallica were at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘St Anger’, the bands fourth US No.1, a No.3 hit in the UK. 2008 – Liverpool was voted England’s most musical city in a national campaign set up by the Arts Council. 2012 – Asia announce the release of their new album ‘XXX’

Two days later the band’s guitar player, James Honeyman-Scott, dies. The album went on to sell over 30 million copies world-wide making Morissette the first female Canadian to score a US No.1 album. 2003 – The elder statesman of music were rewarded in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours list for their services to music. Carlos-drummer for Cheap Trick born today 1951 - Brad Delp-singer for Boston is born in Boston 1965 – All four of the Beatles are named to receive MBE’s in Queen Elizabeth’s Birthdays Honours List. 1966: The Dave Clark Five made their record breaking twelfth appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show. The band later made six more appearances, a record for a British band. 1970: The Guess Who performed at the White House for an audience which included Prince Charles and the Nixons. Mrs. Nixon requested that they drop “American Woman” from the set. 1972: John Lennon released his third post-Beatles album Some Time in New York City his fourth album with Yoko Ono. 1977 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Dreams,” Fleetwood Mac. 1982: Jackson Browne, Gary “U.S.” Bonds, Linda Ronstadt, Bruce Springsteen & James Taylor were among the 750,000 in attendance for the Rally for Nuclear Disarmament at Central Park in New York City, the largest political rally in U.S. history. 1993: Rod Stewart entered the Billboard 200 Album Chart at number two with Unplugged…and Seated which was Stewart’s second live album. It contained his first performance with Ronnie Wood in nearly 20 years & went on to sell three million copies in the U.S. 1998 – John Fogerty cancels the first date of his U.S. tour because it conflicts with Game 5 of the NBA Finals, in which the Chicago Bulls face the Utah Jazz. 2005 – Pink Floyd announced they would reunite with former bassist Roger Waters, who left the band in 1985, on July 2 for the Live 8 London concert. This would be the first time the band had played together as a quartet since The Wall tour in 1981. 2006 – Korn are forced to cancel their European tour after singer Jonathan Davis is hospitalized to treat a blood disorder. 2012: Pearl Jam’s former chief financial officer Rickey Goodrich was charged with thirty-three counts of theft for allegedly stealing $380,000 from the band’s management company & spending the money on lavish vacations, spa treatments, life insurance & pricey California wines.

1949 – ZZ Top drummer Frank Beard – the one with the sensible facial hair – is born in Frankston, Texas. 1952 – Donnie Van Zant (.38 Special) is born this day in rock history 1955 – Fats Domino hit number 1 on the U.S. R&B singles chart for the first of 11 weeks in 1955, with “Ain’t It a Shame” 1958 – Jerry Lee Lewis gets a cold reception in New York. Although he plays the first of two club dates there today, the second show is canceled due to poor ticket sales. Lewis has become a national pariah after it was revealed he married his 14-year-old cousin. 1964 – As Ringo Starr is released from London’s University College Hospital, where he was recuperating from tonsillitis, Queen Elizabeth issues a command to the Beatles to attend her birthday party. 1964 – The Rolling Stones hold a press conference on Chicago’s Michigan Avenue. It ends when the police arrive to break it up. 1966 – The European media report that the Who’s Roger Daltrey has been killed in a car accident. 1967 – Marc Bolan placed an ad in Melody Maker in 1967, looking for some bandmates. It read, “Freaky lead guitarist, bass guitarist and drummer wanted for Marc Bolan’s new band. 1968 – London’s Olympic Studio catches fire while the Rolling Stones are there recording Beggars Banquet. 1970 – Back in the ’70s, it seems we really were interested in every last thing that John Lennon and Yoko Ono did. Today the couple announce that they will continue to vacation in California. 1976 – AC/DC headlined their first concerts in Scotland, where several of the members were born. 1976 – On The Midnight Special, host Helen Reddy welcomes guests Fleetwood Mac. 1979 – Chuck Berry pleads guilty to income tax evasion and is sentenced to four months in prison. 1988 – The Nelson Mandela 70th Birthdays Party Concert in London features Dire Straits, Stevie Wonder and Simple Minds. 1995 – Courtney Love is hospitalized in Seattle after experiencing a bad reaction to prescription medicine. 1998 – Stone Temple Pilots lead Scott Weiland skips a scheduled Superior Court date in Los Angeles and checks himself into a drug treatment facility. 2006 – Izzy Stradlin joins Axl Rose onstage to perform “Patience,” “Night Train” and “I Used to Love Her” with Guns N’ Roses (Mark III) at England’s Download Festival.

Tickets for the shows sold out in 60 hours. 1975 – The Eagles release One of These Nights. 1976 – At Seattle’s Kingdome, Paul McCartney & Wings play for a crowd of 67,100, setting an indoor attendance record. 1978 – The Rolling Stones open a tour in Lakewood, Fla. However, the record company delays the release of the album until the summer, perhaps righteously scared at the Christian direction Dylan had gone in on his last two records. 1992 – A Los Angeles judge throws out a $25 million palimony suit brought against British rock singer Rod Stewart by Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Kelly Emberg, his longtime girlfriend. She had claimed the couple lived together as husband and wife. 2001 – Flooding in the Houston area forces the cancellation of a concert by Journey with Peter Frampton and John Waite. 2004 – Peter Garrett, the former lead singer of Midnight Oil announces he will run for a seat on the Australian parliament as a Labour Party candidate.

He plays with Steve Miller in 1959 and again from 1967-69. 1947 – Mick Box, guitarist for Uriah Heep is born. 1954 – United States record companies distributed the first ever 45rpm vinyl discs. 1967 – The Beatles ‘Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ went to No.1 in the UK. Costing £25,000 ($42,500) to produce the album was recorded over 700 hours of studio time. It was also the first album to print the lyrics on the sleeve. 1944 – Byrds guitarist Clarence White is born this day 1958 – Prince (Prince Roger Nelson) is born in Minneapolis. 1964 – During their first ever US tour The Rolling Stones were booed off stage at a gig in San Antonio, Texas. Some performing Monkeys who had been the act on before the Stones were brought back on stage for another performance. 1968 – Fleetwood Mac, Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane all appeared for the first of a three night run at the Carousel Ballroom, San Francisco, California. 1969 – Blind Faith makes its live debut in a London park. 150,000 people attend the free performance. 1969 – Keith Richards and his partner Anita Pallenburg were involved in a car crash near their home in Sussex. Richards escaped serious injury but Pallenburg was taken to hospital with a broken collarbone and the car was a write-off. 1969 – Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell both appeared on the first ABC TV Johnny Cash Show from Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. 1970 – The Who performs its rock opera, “Tommy,” at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House. 1975 – Elton John’s album ‘Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboys’, went to No.1 on the US album chart, the first album ever to enter the US chart at No.1. 1977 – Led Zeppelin played the first of six sold out nights at Madison Square Garden, in New York City. 1987 – David Bowie played a concert in West Berlin in front of the Reichstag with the speakers pointing towards the nearby Berlin Wall where thousands of young East Berliners stood and listened. 1990 – The Black Crowes played their debut UK gig at the Marquee in London. 1991 – During their Use Your Illusion Tour, Guns n’ Roses played the first of two nights at the CNE Stadium in Toronto, Canada. 1994 – Grace Slick is ordered to serve 200 hours of community service and attend four Alcoholics Anonymous meetings after being found guilty of pointing a gun at police in March. 2007 – The funeral of guitarist, singer Bo Diddley took place in Gainesville, Florida. 2008 – 3 Doors Down were at No.1 on the US album chart with their self titled second US No.1. 2012 – Bob Welch, an early member of rock band Fleetwood Mac died

Wood, who is accompanied by his wife, is admitted to the Priory Clinic in an effort to overcome his addiction to alcohol before the Rolling Stones launch another world tour. 2002 – Founding Ratt guitarist Robbin Crosby succumbs to AIDS after an eight-year battle with the disease. Crosby, who co-wrote many of the pop-metal band’s best-known songs, is 42. 2003 – Officials at Six Flags in Darien Lakes, N.Y., ban Marilyn Manson’s Ozzfest appearance in August. 2004 – Metallica play a rare gig without drummer Lars Ulrich, who is sidelined with an undisclosed illness. The rat meant to be dinner for his boa constrictor bites the reptile, killing it. Cooper weeps that it’s like “like being hit on by your Wheaties” and vows to replace the snake. 1956 – Reeves Gabrels is born on today.He giged with David Bowie from 1987 to 2000. 1964 – Jimmy Nicol becomes the Beatles’ temporary drummer when Ringo Starr becomes ill before start of a world tour. 1974 – Stefan Lessard who plays bass for the Dave Matthews Band is born 1986 – The Conspiracy of Hope concert tour, starring Bryan Adams, Sting, Peter Gabriel, and U2, opens at San Francisco’s Cow Palace. 1990 – Stu Sweatman plays at Del Mar station. Ozzy Osbourne and entourage shows up at the gig and checks it out. 1997 – Ronnie Lane, bassist with the Small Faces and, later, the Faces, dies at his home in Colorado. He is 51. Lane had suffered from multiple sclerosis since 1977. 1997 – The body of Jeff Buckley is found floating in a harbor leading to the Mississippi River. Buckley had disappeared the previous Thursday while swimming with a friend 2000 – At a gig in Atlanta, Bruce Springsteen plays two new songs. 1941 – Charles Robert “Charlie” Watts is born 1964 – The Rolling Stones make their U.S. debut performance at the Manning Bowl in Lynn, Mass. 1972 – Former teen idol Dion performs in a reunion concert with The Belmonts at Madison Square Garden in New York. 1973 – Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham settles an argument with promoter Bill Graham at a San Francisco gig by emptying a bucket of water over him. 1984 – Aerosmith played at the Capitol Theater in Concord, New Hampshire, the first night on their 59 date North American Back In The Saddle Tour. 1993 – Aerosmith appeared at the Landon Arena in Kansas, the first night on their 169 date Get A Grip world tour. 1998 – Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Famer Rod Stewart performs a series of one-hour shows along the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood to promote his current album “When We Were the New Boys.” 2000 – Napster.com asks the Offspring to stop selling merchandise with its logo on it. The Web site also announces the reinstatement of 30,000 Metallica fans barred from using its MP3-sharing software. 2003 – Following a dispute over songwriting credits with John Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono, Paul McCartney agrees to let “Lennon-McCartney” be. McCartney outraged many Beatles fans by demanding “Yesterday” and other McCartney songs be credited to “McCartney-Lennon.” 2003 – Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland pleads innocent to drugs possession charges in Los Angeles. Court officials say Weiland will enter a rehab facility to combat cocaine and heroin addiction. 2004 – Sir Paul McCartney tells Uncut magazine that he tried heroin without realising. “I was just handed something, smoked it, then found out what it was,” he says. “It didn’t do anything for me.” 2008 – Bo Diddly dies this day

Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. The album is certified gold for sales on its first day in stores. 1969 – During their noted “bed-in” at the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal, John Lennon and Yoko Ono record “Give Peace a Chance” with friends Tommy and Dick Smothers, Derek Taylor, Murray the K and Timothy Leary. 1973 – Paul McCartney & Wings release the single “Live and Let Die” from the James Bond movie of the same name. 1974 – Alanis Morissette, singer, songwriter is born 1977 – Kiss release their album Love Gun. 1978 – Bob Dylan performs the first of several warm-up shows for the second leg of his 1978 world tour in Los Angeles. 1980 – Jimmy Page buys Michael Caine’s English mansion for a reported 900,000 pounds. 1987 – Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz, aka Ad-Rock, is released on bail in Liverpool after being accused of assaulting a fan. 1998 – Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland, who was arrested for possession of cocaine and heroin in 1995, is arrested for drug possession again in New York. Weiland, who has about $100 worth of heroin, according to police, is charged with criminal trespassing and criminal possession of a controlled substance. 2003 – Paul McCartney wraps up his lucrative world tour with a show in Liverpool, birthplace of the Beatles. 2004 – Sum 41 flee the Congo after an outbreak of rebel violence in the country’s ongoing civil war. The Canadian punk rockers were in the country to make a documentary drawing attention to the African nation’s problems. 2004 – U2 frontman Bono tries to persuade European Union ministers to extend debt relief programs for the world’s poorest countries when he addresses a special meeting in Dublin. 2005 – The White Stripes’ Jack White marries Karen Elson, a redhaired model who appeared in the duo’s “Blue Orchid,” video. The pair were wed in a canoe standing at the confluence of the Rio Negro, the Solimones and the Amazon rivers. 2008 – Alton Kelley, one of the founding members of the ’60s San Francisco rock scene, died Sunday June 1st, 2008 at his home in Petaluma after a long illness. He was 67. Mr. Kelley will be remembered as the creator (with his artistic partner, Stanley Mouse) of hundreds of classic psychedelic rock posters, such as the famed “skull and roses” poster for a Grateful Dead show at the Avalon Ballroom.
