1942 – Jerry Garcia (Jerome John Garcia) of the Grateful Dead is born in San Francisco. 1946 - Boz Burrell-bassist for Bad Company & King Crimson is born 1951 - Tommy Bolin-guitarist for the James Gang & Deep Purple born 1959 – Singer Joe Elliott of Def Leppard is born in Sheffield 1971: The Concert for Bangladesh, organized by George Harrison took place at Madison Square Garden. The concert featured Harrison, Bob Dylan, Ringo Starr, Eric Clapton, Billy Preston, Leon Russell, Ravi Shankar and members of Badfinger. 1974 - The Who’s Pete Townshend & Keith Moon joined Eric Clapton onstage during a concert at the Omni in Atlanta. Townshend jammed on “Layla” & Moon sang along on “Little Queenie”. Townshend later smashed a plastic ukulele over Clapton’s head. 1979 - During a concert at Madison Square Garden, Peter Frampton was awarded the Gold Ticket for performing to over 100,000 fans at the Garden. 1994 - The Rolling Stones kicked off their Voodoo Lounge Tour at RFK Stadium in Washington, DC. This tour would last over a year & go on to gross $320 million, becoming the highest grossing tour at the time. 1997 – Ireland’s Supreme Court gives the go-ahead for two U2 Popmart concerts scheduled for August 30 and 31 at Landsdowne Road stadium in Dublin. Earlier in the week, the country’s High Court had, under pressure from locals fearing excessive noise and general mayhem, overstepped its jurisdiction and banned the two gigs. 2004 – Red Hot Chili Peppers top the UK albums chart with Live at Hyde Park. 2006 – A man dies after being severely beaten by two unidentified assailants in the moshpit at Korn’s Atlanta concert. The band appeal for witnesses to the attack to help with the investigation. 2006 – Drummer Jon Theodore leaves egghead rockers The Mars Volta shortly before the release of their third album Amputechture. He is replaced by Blake Fleming. 2007 – John Lennon’s “granny” sunglasses sold at auction. 2009 – Daughtry hits No.1 on the US album charts.

1923 - Ahmet Ertegun-founder of Atlantic Records & co-founder of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is born 1958 – Bill Berry of R.E.M. is born. 1964 – A Rolling Stones concert in Belfast, Northern Ireland, is stopped after only 12 minutes when violence breaks out in the audience. 1965 – In England, the Yardbirds with Jeff Beck perform at the Cleethorpes Jazz Festival. 1966 –Cream play their first gig in Windsor 1966 – In Birmingham, Ala., a Beatles record-burning session is held to protest John Lennon’s “bigger than Jesus” remark. 1967 – After a public outcry, a London Appeals Court drops drug charges against Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards. Mick Jagger, also busted for drugs, has his jail sentence reduced to a conditional discharge. The Stones record “We Love You” to commemorate the event. 1968 – The Beatles record “Hey Jude.” 1970 – After Decca Records demands a final single from the Rolling Stones to make them fulfill their contract, Richards and Jagger deliver the unreleasable “C********r Blues.” The single becomes the title of a Stones documentary that the band decides is also unreleasable. 1971 – Pink Floyd leave England to set out on their first tour of the Far East. 1971 – Big day in Stones history: At London’s Rialto cinema, the documentary Gimme Shelter premieres. The film includes footage from the infamous concert at Altamont. 1971 – At a Who concert in Forest Hills, N.Y., a security guard is stabbed. 1978 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Miss You,” The Rolling Stones. The song is the band’s eighth No. 1 single. 1980 - The Eagles performed their last concert at the Long Beach Arena. They split up later in the year & reunited in 1994. 1984 – Eric Clapton leaves Roger Waters’ Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking tour in Canada after two weeks. 2012 –Ten fans of English rock band The Who traded in tickets from a canceled 1979 gig in Rhode Island for entry to the group’s upcoming February show, in a rare tale of loyalty spanning the decades.

The band claims that they are tired of being urged to represent Collins’ many social causes. 2001 – Peter Buck, guitarist for R.E.M., pleads not guilty to a series of charges relating to an alleged “air rage” incident during a transatlantic flight in April. 2003 – Police issue a warrant for Motley Crue singer Vince Neil’s arrest after he allegedly attacks a prostitute at Nevada’s Moonlite Bunny Ranch. 2003 – The Rolling Stones headline a one-day festival in Toronto to revive the city’s tourism industry following an outbreak of the SARS virus. Other performers include AC/DC, Rush and Justin Timberlake. An estimated 450,000 people attend. 2003 – Iron Maiden drummer Michael “Nicko” McBrain is arrested and charged with assault after hitting a parking attendant with his car 2006 – The endlessly fascinating W. Axl Rose is forced to abandon a Guns N’ Roses show at London’s Wembley Arena due to “low blood pressure.” Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach takes his place for the encore. 2007: Shortly after Jimmy Page testified, Robert Langley pleaded guilty to trademark & copyright infringements after having more than $22,000 worth of bootleg Led Zeppelin cd’s & dvd’s seized at a record convention in Glasgow in 2005. 2009 – Procol Harum organist Matthew Fisher is officially recognized as a co-writer on ‘Whiter Shade of Pale.

Headliners include Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and Peter, Paul & Mary. With a good sense of timing, Peter, Paul & Mary also release their interpretation of Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind,” which later goes to No. 2. 1965 – The Beatles’ second film – “Help!” – premieres in London. Queen Elizabeth is in attendance. 1966 – The Beatles: The U.S. teen magazine Datebook reprints an earlier quote by John Lennon stating that “We’re more popular than Jesus now.” This prompted Beatles Bonfires and the banning of their music by radio stations. 1966 – Bob Dylan is injured in a motorcycle accident near his Woodstock, N.Y., home; he goes into seclusion. 1967 – Doors: ‘Light My Fire’ US 45 is no. 1 chart topper. Later, Jim Morrison will sing the correct lyrics after Ed Sullivan asked him not to because of risque subject matter. 1968 – The Byrds head off to South Africa to tour. However, one Byrd who isn’t going is Gram Parsons, who is protesting South African apartheid. 1970 – The Rolling Stones’ contract with Decca ends. The band informs manager Allen Klein that “neither he nor ABKCO Industries have any authority to negotiate recording contracts on their behalf” and begins to consider starting its own label. 1973 – The takings from two Led Zeppelin concerts are stolen from the group’s New York hotel. The thieves are said to have gotten away with more than $180,000. 1976 – Eric Clapton begins his first English tour in five years at Hempstead’s Pavilion Theatre. 1980 – David Bowie opens on stage in Denver in the title role of “Elephant Man” to critical acclaim. 1987 – Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream introduces their Cherry Garcia flavor, named after the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia. 1990 – Elton John checks into a suburban Chicago clinic to cure bulimia and an addiction problem. 1994 – Pink Floyd guitarist Dave Gilmour marries Polly Samson at England’s Marylebone Registry Office. 2003 – Bobby Thompson, Ozzy Osbourne’s longtime tour manager, dies in his hotel room in Birmingham, Mich., after a long battle with throat cancer. He is 50. 2004 – Bobby Gillespie, singer with British rock band Primal Scream, is awarded undisclosed damagers in a libel suit against a tabloid that alleged he was having an affair with supermodel Kate Moss. 2005 – John Lennon’s handwritten lyrics for “All You Need is Love”, gathered from his music stand after The Beatles’ final television appearance in 1967, sold at an auction in London for $1 million to an anonymous bidder. 2006 – Kid Rock and Pamela Anderson are married on a luxury yacht in San Tropez. 2007 – Paul Stanley of Kiss suffered heart problems. Paul was playing a show in California when he felt a strange chest pain… Paramedics tried to create a regular rhythm after his heart jumped up to 190 beats per minute.

1944 – Blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield is born in Chicago. 1945 – Rick Wright of Pink Floyd is born in London. 1949 – Steve Took, who played with Marc Bolan in T. Rex, is born. He was asked to leave the band in 1969 after several bizarre incidents that included giving himself a vicious beating onstage. 1949 - Simon Kirke-drummer for Free & Bad Company is born 1954 - Steve Morse-guitarist for Deep Purple is born 1965 – Rolling Stone Charlie Watts is moving up in the world. He buys a 16th century wooden mansion in Sussex, England. 1965 – The Who make their first appearance on British TV’s Ready Steady Go! Their managers pack the audience with mods, ensuring a rapturous reception as the band rips through “I Can’t Explain.” 1970 – Ned Kelly, starring Mick Jagger as the behelmeted highwayman, opens in Australia. Reception is unkind. 1973 – A crowd of 600,000 gathers for a rock festival at Watkins Glen Raceway, N.Y., to hear the Grateful Dead, the Band and the Allman Brothers Band. 1973 – Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re An American Band” is released. It will top the Billboard chart near the end of September. 1975 – Bob Dylan plays his first session for the Desire album. 1978 – In response to a fan’s request, Ted Nugent autographs his arm. With a Bowie knife. 1979 – The World Series of Rock is held at Cleveland Stadium, with Journey, Ted Nugent and Thin Lizzy. 1982 – To Jackson Browne, a son. Browne and second wife Lynne Sweeney become the proud parents of Ryan Daniel Browne today. 1993 – Roger Waters marries Priscilla Phillips at the Romsey Registry Office 1995 – Control of Jimi Hendrix’s estate is passed on to his father, James Al Hendrix, who fought a long legal battle for the rights to his son’s likeness and music. 1999 – Eddie Vedder joins Pete Townshend onstage at New York’s Supper Club to rip through “Magic Bus” and “Better Man.” 1999 – Steve Tyler of Aerosmith tells the New York Daily News he’s trying to prevent his ex-wife from printing naked photos of him in a new book. 2001 – Presley Scott Harwell, son of Smash Mouth lead singer Steve Harwell and Michelle Laroque, dies from complications due to acute lymphatic leukemia. 2004 – The second highest new entry in U.S. album charts is Van Halen’s new hits collection The Best of Both Worlds, which lands at No. 3.

Today in rock history 27th July

1955 – Chuck Berry’s debut single, “Maybellene,” enters the R&B chart. It later becomes a No. 1 R&B hit, remaining at the top for 11 weeks. 1969 – Led Zeppelin and the Doors play the Seattle Pop Festival. But Robert Plant isn’t too impressed with Jim Morrison. He remembers, “He hung on the side of the stage and nearly toppled into the audience and did all those things that I suppose were originally sexual things. 1976 – Bruce Springsteen sues his former manager Mike Appel for fraud and breach of contract. Appel later files a countersuit, and ties up Springsteen’s recording the follow-up to Born to Run for the next two years. 1976 – John Lennon receives his “green card” from U.S. immigration authorities. 1977 – Led Zeppelin call off the remainder of their North American tour after Robert Plant’s son, Karac, dies of a respiratory ailment. 1979 – Before the Cooper’stown restaurant in Phoenix, there was Alice Cooper’s Indian Art Store in Scottsdale, Ariz. Today it’s hit by a firebomb that destroys $200,000 worth of merchandise. Cooper blames disco fans. 1984 – The Prince film “Purple Rain” premieres. 1986 – Queen becomes the first Western act since Louis Armstrong in 1964 to play in Budapest, Hungary. 1991 – Warrant lead singer Jani Lane marries model Bobbie Brown in Los Angeles. 1995 – In Montpelier, France, the Rolling Stones are joined onstage by support act Bob Dylan for a version of his “Like a Rolling Stone.” 2000 – The Rhyme & Reason Tour, featuring the Beastie Boys and Rage Against the Machine postponed due to a biking injury suffered by Beastie Boys principal Mike D. 2001 – Leon Wilkeson, bassist of Southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, dies in his sleep in his Jacksonville, Fla., home. He is 49. 2002 – The Who’s John Entwistle is found dead in his hotel room in Las Vegas. 2004 – Courtney Love is sentenced to 18 months probation after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor drug charge. She is also ordered to attend rehab. 2006 – Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger is arrested for drunk driving after being stopped swerving in Surrey, British Columbia.

1943 - Mick Jagger born Dartford, Kent 1949 – Queen drummer Roger Taylor is born in Kings Lynn 1961 – There was a hole in his heart – and he was former Extreme and Van Halen singer Gary Cherone, born today. 1968 – Howlin’ Wolf plays the first of three nights at San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom, supported by Quicksilver Messenger Service. 1968 – Decca pulls the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet from its release schedule, citing problems with the sleeve. 1968 – John Lennon and Paul McCartney complete “Hey Jude” during a writing session at Paul’s home. 1970 - Jimi Hendrix performed in his hometown of Seattle for the last time at Sicks Stadium. He reminded the audience how disappointed he was that he had to go to the U.K. to make it in the music business before his home country accepted him. 1974 – The first Beatles Convention is held in Boston. 1976 - Ted Nugent received his first Gold album for his self-titled debut album released the previous year. It later went on to sell two million copies in the U.S. 1977 – Elvis Costello is arrested for playing outside the London Hilton. The new wave songwriter was hoping to interest record executives into giving him an American record deal, as a CBS Records conference was being held inside. He’s fined 5 pounds, but CBS invites him to play a proper audition. 1977 - Robert Plant’s son Karac died of an unidentified viral infection. Led Zeppelin’s tour of North America was immediately cancelled. 1979 – Today’s Rolling Stone reports on the popularity of promotional videos, citing David Bowie’s “Boys Keep Swinging” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” as examples. 1990 – Grateful Dead keyboardist Brent Mydland dies of a drug overdose in Lafayette, Calif., at age 38. 1992 – Kiss guitarist Paul Stanley marries actress-model Pamela Bowen in Los Angeles. 2000 – Oasis are forced off stage at Switzerland’s Paleo Festival after being pelted with bottles and cans. A promoter says, “The arrogant, provocative attitude of Liam Gallagher is doubtless not unconnected to the reaction of the audience.” 2003 – Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain is arrested outside of their Wantagh, N.Y., date after allegedly running over a parking attendant. 2003 – Limp Bizkit abandon their set during the Chicago stop of the Summer Sanitarium tour after the crowd hurl plastic bottles at singer Fred Durst. 2003 – Mick Jagger celebrates turning 60 at a private party in Prague. Among the invitees is former Czech president Vaclev Havel, who gives Jagger a two-foot-high crystal vase. 2004 – The Darkness return to their old school in Lowestoft, England, to open a new music center. They also take part in a Q&A session with pupils. 2004 - A Staples back-to-school campaign commercial starring Alice Cooper humorously utilizing Cooper’s “School’s Out” premiered nationally. The commercial depicted Cooper in the role of a father shopping for back-to-school supplies with his daughter who is unhappy about returning to school.

1943 – Drummer Jim McCarty, the missing link between the Yardbirds and the Detroit Wheels, is born in Liverpool 1950 – Bassist Mark Clarke of hard-rock legends Mountain and Uriah Heep is born in Liverpool 1964 – Today’s Billboard reports on the success of the British group the Animals, who recently enjoyed a U.K. No. 1 with “House of the Rising Son.” 1965 – Bob Dylan performs his first non-acoustic set at the Newport Folk Festival to a hostile crowd. 1966 – The Rolling Stones play San Francisco. The concert is their last American live performance with founding guitarist Brian Jones. 1968 – Eric Clapton plays lead guitar for George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” on the album “The Beatles” (also known as “The White Album”). 1967 – In today’s London Times appears a petition calling for the legalization of marijuana. It’s signed by the Beatles and their manager, Brian Epstein. 1969 – Led Zeppelin play Milwaukee at the Midwest Rock Festival. 1969 – Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young give their first live performance at the Fillmore East in New York. 1970 – Chicago release their single “25 or 6 to 4.” 1980 – Kiss unveil their new drummer at New York’s Palladium. The newly christened Eric Carr, born Paul Caravello, is made up to look like a fox after the band decides against the hawk look. 1984 – The body of “Big Mama” Thornton, who recorded the original “Hound Dog,” is found in a Los Angeles boarding house. She was 57. 1990 – To the Boss, a son. Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa become the proud parents of Evan James. 1992 – Bryan Adams helps two motorists whose car struck his on a highway in St. Gellen, Switzerland. Adams was traveling from Zurich to Vienna as part of a concert tour when the other car skidded out of control, grazed his car and hit an embankment. 1999 - On the final day of Woodstock ’99 in Rome, NY, riots occurred during the closing set by the Red Hot Chili Peppers which resulted in 120 arrests. 2001 - The Doors’ drummer John Densmore & Bonnie Raitt among others were arrested in Itasca, IL for protesting against a company that is claimed to destroy rainforests. 2003 – A student film of John Lennon imitating a baboon sells for $53,700 at an auction. 2003 – Iron Butterfly guitarist Erik Braunn dies of heart failure. He was 52. 2005 – Megadeth lead singer Dave Mustaine sues his former bassist David Ellefson, alleging he used the name of the group without Mustaine’s permission. 2010 - Emerson, Lake & Palmer performed a one-off fortieth anniversary concert headlining the initial High Voltage festival at London’s Victoria Park.

1957 – Drummer Alan Whitehead of Marmalade is born in Oswestry, England. 1961 – Extreme drummer Paul Geary is born 1964 – Bob Dylan performs at the Newport Folk Festival, showing off his new originals-only singer/songwriter image rather than the Dustbowl Orphan of yore. The reviews are not great. 1964 – A riot breaks out when the Rolling Stones play the English city of Blackpool, contributing to their bad-boys-of-rock image. 1965 – At the Newport Folk Festival today, Bob Dylan performs “All I Really Wanna Do” at an afternoon workshop. The following day he scandalizes the festival when he makes his electric debut. 1967 - Jefferson Airplane received their first Gold record for their second album Surrealistic Pillow. 1972 – The No. 1 record in the U.K. is T. Rex’s “Get It On.” 1977: Led Zeppelin performed their final concert in the U.S. at Alameda County Coliseum in Oakland. Rick Derringer & Judas Priest was the opening acts. 1978 – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, starring Peter Frampton, George Burns, and the Bee Gees, opens in New York. The reviews are not great. 1980 – Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra announces he will run for mayor of San Francisco. He comes fourth. 1988 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Roll with It,” Steve Winwood. 1990 – The case against Judas Priest opens in Reno, Nev. The band members are accused of planting subliminal messages in their album Stained Class that led two young fans to attempt suicide. They would later divorce in 2007. 2003 – The film Masked and Anonymous, starring Bob Dylan as an enigmatic rock performer, opens in New York 2005 – Patrick Sherry, vocalist of up and coming West Yorkshire rock band, Bad Beat Revue, died today Sherry leapt towards the crowd at the end of the bands set and tried to grab a lighting rig from the ceiling but missed and hit the floor. Guitar god and top-hat lover Slash is born today in Stoke-on-Trent 1965 – The Kinks storm through “You Really Got Me” on the TV show, Where the Action Is. 1966 – Prime Minister Harold Wilson personally reopens The Cavern Club in Liverpool, 1971 – The Rolling Stones and Brian Jones’ father sue former manager Allen Klein for $29 million, alleging that he mismanaged the band’s funds. 1977 – Judas Priest begins its first U.S. tour in Oakland, Calif., as the opening act for Led Zeppelin. 1977 – It’s a rock-promoter rumble between the forces of Led Zep manager Peter Grant and Bill Graham. Guitarist Brian Bell says expect “more textures.” 2003 – Ozzy Osbourne’s longtime tour manager Bobby Thomson dies in his sleep prior to Ozzfest’s Detroit stop. 2004 – Courtney Love turns herself in at a Los Angeles police station. The aging grunge princess became a wanted woman after failing to appear at arraignment to respond to a charge of felony assault with a deadly weapon. 2004 – Linkin Park’s Projekt Revolution tour kicks off in Cincinnati. The song is the first single from Gabriel’s album “So.” 1998 – Raimundo Amador, Spain’s premier exponent of gypsy flamenco-blues, records a live album alongside his idol, B.B. King, in front of a capacity audience of 20,000 at Madrid’s Las Ventas bullring. 1996 – Now Slayer just doesn’t seem to be the sort of band you’d ever accuse of being satanic. But that’s just what the angry parents of a murdered girl in California say. In their lawsuit against Slayer and American Recordings, they claim three boys were incited to kill Elyse Pahler through the group’s lyrics. 2005 – The Doors drummer John Densmore wins a ruling that keeps the other two surviving members – Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger – from using the band’s name as part of their oldies act, The Doors of the 21st Century.

Their second album fails to chart. 1969 – Janis Joplin and her Kozmic Blues Band make their first appearance on The Dick Cavett Show. 1970 – Pink Floyd and Deep Purple play a free concert at London’s Hyde Park that attracts an audience of 20,000. 1972 – Boston Mayor Kevin White helps get Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones out of jail in Warwick, R.I., so they can make their performance at the Boston Garden. John was the drummer for the band Styx. 2002 – Dave Matthews Band release Busted Stuff, whose songs date from bootlegged sessions held with producer Steve Lillywhite prior to the release of 2001’s Everyday. 2003 – Santana wraps up his Supernatural tour and donates $2 million to help conquer the AIDS crisis in South Africa. 2003 – Pretenders frontwoman Chrissie Hynde blocks traffic with fellow PETA protesters in front of a Paris Kentucky Fried Chicken. They also cover the restaurant’s windows in red blood. Hynde is taken into police custody and released about an hour later. 2007 – The White Stripes played their ‘shortest live show ever’ at George Street, St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada. Jack White played a single C# note accompanied by a bass drum/crash cymbal hit from Meg. At the end of the show, Jack announced, “We have now officially played in every province and territory in Canada.” 2012 - Deep Purple keyboardist Jon Lord died after suffering a pulmonary embolism at the London Clinic. He was 71 years old.

Electric Flag and Blue Cheer play the final Fillmore concerts. 1969 – At the Mississippi River Rock Festival, the Band find themselves upstaged when their boss, Bob Dylan, joins them on stage for three songs. He’s introduced as “Elmer Johnson.” 1977 – Elvis Costello played the first gig with his new band, The Attractions, in 1977, less than a week after quitting his day job at Elizabeth Arden. 1980 – Former Beatles and Stones manager Allen Klein begins a two-month jail sentence for cheating on his tax return. 1982 – Alan Parker’s film Pink Floyd’s The Wall premieres at the Leicester Square Empire in London. 1987 – Steve Miller is awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 1989 – Alice Cooper releases his comeback single “Poison.” It later goes to No. 7, his biggest hit since 1972’s “School’s Out.” 1992 – Megadeth release their fifth album Countdown to Extinction, which becomes their most successful record to date – peaking at No. 2 in the Billboard album charts. 1992- Motley Crue began writing & rehearsing with their new singer John Corabi. He is 69. 2007 – A pair of glasses worn by former Beatle John Lennon sparked a bidding war after being offered for sale online. 1942 – Drummer Stephen Jo Bladd of the J. Geils Band is born in Boston. 1957 – Elvis tops the English charts for the first time with “All Shook Up.” 1962 – Bob Dylan signs a deal with the music publisher Witmark. 1967 – Herman’s Hermits kick off their North American tour in Calgary, Alberta. With The Who opening up for them 1968 – Steppenwolf release “Born to Be Wild” to the delight of bikers everywhere. The lyrics are responsible for the term “heavy metal.” 1968: Black Sabbath performed their first concert at a blues club in Birmingham, U.K. At the time of this performance they were known as Earth. 1969 – New York’s Flushing Meadows Singer Bowl plays host to a festival that sees sets from the Jeff Beck Group, Vanilla Fudge, Jethro Tull, Ten Years After, and Led Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin literally play a set that no one can follow, and Vanilla Fudge pull out of the lineup rather than try to top the heavy metal quartet. During the Jeff Beck Group’s set, John Bonham strips off his clothes and has to be bundled off stage. The evening ends with various musicians performing “Jailhouse Rock.” 1973 – Queen release their self-titled debut album. 1974 – Eric Clapton releases his hit version of “I Shot the Sheriff.” 1978 – The BBC bans the Sex Pistols song “No One Is Innocent.” 1981 – Bob Dylan gives a press conference in Denmark after having seen an interview with an imposter in a Danish newspaper. He answers questions for two hours. 1984 – The Jacksons’ Victory tour reaches Dallas, where Eddie Van Halen joins Michael Jackson on stage to perform “Beat It.” 1985: Live Aid, spearheaded by Bob Geldof to raise funds for famine relief in Ethiopia was held in London’s Wembley Stadium and Philadelphia’s JFK Stadium. Performers included Sting, U2, Dire Straits, Queen, David Bowie, The Who, Elton John, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Bryan Adams, Neil Young and Led Zeppelin. 1991: Bryan Adams went to number one for a record 16 weeks on the U.K. singles chart with “(Eveything I Do) I Do It for You” a record that still stands to this day. 1993 – At the All-Star baseball game in Baltimore, Rush’s Geddy Lee treats the audience to his interpretation of “Oh Canada.” 2002 – Oasis, Gomez, No Doubt, Starsailor, Foo Fighters, Chemical Brothers and Green Day all appeared at this years two day T In The Park Festival at Kinross, Scotland. 2004 – New York Dolls bassist Arthur Kane dies in Los Angeles due to complications from leukemia. The singer is said to have started a melee by diving into a crowd during the Guns N’ Roses concert. 1999 – Limp Bizkit frontman and Interscope senior executive Fred Durst is arrested in St. Paul, Minn. after allegedly kicking a local security guard in the head during the band’s show at Roy Wilkins Auditorium. 2000 -A statue honoring John Lennon is unveiled in London. The sculpture is of a handgun with a knotted barrel. 2003 –Rob Halford announces he’s rejoining Judas Priest for a new album and tour – their first together in 13 years. 2005 – Veteran rock group INXS emerges from the land down under with a new record deal and a very public search for a new singer. He undergoes abdominal surgery while the band is in Germany. 1998 – MTV airs “Beastiography,” a special profiling the Beastie Boys. 1999 – Limp Bizkit started a three week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Significant Other’ the bands first US No.1. 2002 – The funeral of The Who’s bass player John Entwistle took place at a church in The Cotswolds. The often-vandalized grave becomes a shrine for fans. 1972 – Paul McCartney’s Wings makes its concert debut in Chateauvillon, France. It is McCartney’s first live performance since the breakup of the Beatles. 1978 – The Rolling Stones drop in on Chicago’s Quiet Knight club to jam with hero Muddy Waters. 1990 – After complaining of an inflamed finger at a Glasgow, Scotland, concert, Keith Richards discovers the digit has gone septic. 1996 – For the first time, Deep Purple play “Smoke on the Water” in the Swiss city that inspired the tune. The band wrote “Smoke on the Water” after surviving a nightclub fire in Montreux. 1998 – Scott Weiland misses his second court date, stemming from drug possession charges earlier in the year. 1999 – The marriage between Mick Jagger and Jerry Hall is annulled in an English court. 2001 – James Hetfield, lead singer and guitarist of hard rock act Metallica, checks himself into an undisclosed rehab facility “to undergo treatment for alcoholism and other addictions.” 2003 – The White Stripes guitarist/singer Jack White is in a car accident in his native Detroit, leaving him with a compound fracture to his left index finger. 2004 – Courtney Love is rushed to hospital in New York with what her lawyer calls “a gynecological medical condition.” 2006 – A plaque is stolen from Bon Scott’s grave in Western Australia on what would have been the late AC/DC frontman’s 60th birthday. 2010 – Slash featuring Myles Kennedy with special guest Fergie to perform at Sunset Strip Music Festival

The song is the opening theme for the film “The Blackboard Jungle,” starring Glenn Ford and inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1982. 1969: Marianne Faithfull collapsed due to a barbiturate overdose on the set of Ned Kelly after Mick Jagger told her their relationship was over and was sent to a Sydney hospital. She was later dropped from the movie. 1970 – Beck Hansen born today 1971: A mini riot broke out during a Mott the Hoople concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall, which caused the venue to temporarily ban rock concerts. 1984 – At Wembley Stadium, Bob Dylan is joined by U2’s Bono and Van Morrison. All three unite for a spin through “It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue.” 2000 – Halfway into the first song of the band’s encore for their Mannheim, Germany show, Iron Maiden guitarist Janick Gers falls losing his footing and plunges 10-feet off the front of the stage and into the photographers’ pit. 2003 – A tooth and lock of hair reputedly belonging to Elvis Presley turns up for sale on eBay. 2003 – Canadian rockers Nickelback film the video to “Someday” with director Nigel Dick in their Vancouver hometown. 2003 – Upon the release of the 2003 UN Human Development report, U2 singer and campaigner Bono says he’s “about to bang a lot of dustbin lids” if the problem of global poverty is not addressed soon. 2003 – David Lee Roth releases Diamond Dave during the course of which he butchers – I mean, covers – The Doors’ “Soul Kitchen,” Jimi Hendrix’s “If 6 was 9″ and The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows.” 2004 – Scott Weiland, formerly of Stone Temple Pilots and lately of the chart-topping Velvet Revolver, is given three years probation after being found guilty of DUI in a Los Angeles court. 2004 – Mark Purseglove known as the world’s ‘biggest bootlegger’ was sentenced to 3 years 6 months jail by Blackfriars Crown Court. Purseglove had built up a £15 million pirate CD empire by bootlegging live concerts of some of the world’s biggest stars including The Beatles, David Bowie and Pink Floyd. 2010 – Bret Michaels’ doctors deny rumours that singer faked medical emergencies 2010 – Ozzy Osbourne has said he was against the idea of replacing Bob Daisley and Lee Kerslake’s work on his first two solo albums.

1940 – Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey) is born in Liverpool, 1957 – Elvis Presley scored his first UK No.1 with ‘All Shook Up’, 1962 – The Beatles played at Hulme Hall, Port Sunlight, in Birkenhead. The show was a dance for the local golf club, the capacity of the hall was 450, but 500 people squeezed in to hear and see The Beatles. 1963 – The Rolling Stones made their UK TV debut when they appeared on ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars.’ Also appearing on the show was, Mickie Most, The Cadets, Helen Shapiro and Gordon Mills. The group made a total of 13 appearances on the show between 1963 and 1966. 1966 – The Kinks were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Sunny Afternoon’, the group’s third and last UK No.1. 1967 – The Monkees open a national tour with little-known Jimi Hendrix as the opening act. 1968 – The Yardbirds finally call it quits, leading guitarist Jimmy Page to form the New Yardbirds in order to fulfill some tour commitments. The group, featuring Robert Plant, John Bonham, and John Paul Jones, becomes Led Zeppelin. 1969 – George Harrison recorded his new song ‘Here Comes the Sun’ with just two other Beatles, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr at Abbey Road in London. John Lennon was absent recovering from a car crash in Scotland. 1973 – Paul McCartney & Wings release “Live and Let Die.” 1978 – The Grateful Dead played the first of four nights at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado. 1986 – David Lee Roth releases his first solo album, Eat ‘Em and Smile. Rolling Stone decides, “Roth seems to have taken up the challenge from replacement shouter Sammy Hagar to enter into a full-scale battle of the bozos.” 1986 – Bob Dylan performs a second gig with the Grateful Dead, joining them for three songs. 1995 – Rod Stewart’s jet is forced to land at Landvetter Gothenburg International Airport in Sweden after it collides with a bird. 2000 – Metallica vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield aggravates a chronic back injury before a show at Atlanta’s Georgia Dome. The band plays its scheduled sets on the Summer Sanitorium tour in Atlanta, Sparta, Ky., and Irving, Texas, with bassist Jason Newstead handling vocal chores on several songs 2003 – Godsmack cancel their European tour due to “a few projects with contractual deadlines that couldn’t be moved,” according to a spokesperson for the Boston rockers. 2004 – A judge rules that the independent Cleopatra Records label can release Hollywood Rose: The Roots of Guns N’ Roses, an album of early recordings and demos, over the objections of singer Axl Rose. 2006 – Pink Floyd co-founder Roger “Syd” Barrett dies in Cambridge, England at the age of 60, due to complications from diabetes. 2007 – Ozzy Osbourne became the first artist to be honoured on Birmingham’s own Hollywood-style Walk of Fame. The Beatles won’t get a chance to see the finished film until July 10. 1965 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” The Rolling Stones. 1944 – The Band’s Robbie Robertson is born in Toronto. 1950 – Huey Lewis (Hugh Cregg III) is born in New York City. 1954 – Elvis Presley invents rock ‘n’ roll as he, Scotty Moore, and Bill Black start messing around on a song called “That’s All Right” at Memphis’ Sun Studios. 1964 – David Jones (aka David Bowie) and the King Bees release the single “Liza Jane.” 1964 – The Irish band Them, featuring Van Morrison, record “Gloria.” 1966 – Chas Chandler goes to see Jimi Hendrix play at Cafe Wha? in New York’s Greenwich Village. The former Animal later tells Hendrix he should move to London in order to launch his career. 1968 – John Lennon sells his psychedelic Rolls Royce. 1968: Creedence Clearwater Revival released their self-titled debut album which went on to peak at number fifty-two on the Billboard 200 Album Chart and sell one million copies in the U.S. 1969: The Who & Chuck Berry co-headlined the Pop Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall. 1969 – The Rolling Stones turn their free Hyde Park concert into a memorial service for Brian Jones, who died in his swimming pool on July 3. Jagger reads Shelley’s “Adonais” by way of tribute and the band releases thousands of butterflies over the crowd. Sadly, most of the insects had themselves expired. 1971 – A Led Zeppelin gig in Milan turns violent when police fire tear gas at the crowd. The band escapes unharmed, but numerous arrests are made and a roadie is hit in the head with a bottle. 1975 – Pink Floyd premiere their Wish You Were Here album in a performance that takes in fireworks, Spitfire planes flying overhead, and even a model plane that crashes into the stage. 1978 – EMI halts production of the Rolling Stones’ Some Girls album after some of the celebrities featured complain about the use of their images in the cover art. 1988 – A movement to ban Grateful Dead concerts in the town of Oxford, Maine, crumbles after the protestors learn that they would have to ban concerts at the county fair, too. 1989 – Rod Stewart is knocked unconscious after hitting his head onstage. 1990: Kiss had to cancel a scheduled concert in New Haven, CT due to Paul Stanley sustaining neck & back injuries in a car accident the previous day in Pelham, NY. 1995 – More than 100 Grateful Dead fans were hurt when a wooden deck collapsed at a campground lodge in Wentzville, Missouri. Hundreds of people were on or under the deck sheltering from heavy rain. More than 4,000 Deadheads were staying at the campground while attending Grateful Dead concerts in the St. Louis suburb. 1995 – Sorry, Pearl Jam. The Justice Department announces that it will not be investigating antitrust charges against Ticketmaster. 2005: Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour, who’s seen Pink Floyd’s record sales go up after Live 8 suggested that all other Live 8 performers donate their royalties to charity.

Charged with assault, Love receives a suspended one-year sentence and is required to take courses in anger management. 1995 – The Ramones release “Adios Amigos.’‘ It’s speculated to be the band’s last album ever. 2000 – A man dies after plunging 80 feet from the top of Ravens Stadium in Baltimore shortly before a Metallica concert. 2003 -Metallica, Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park, the Deftones and Mudvayne kick off the Summer Sanitarium tour in Pontiac, Michigan. 2007 – Former laboratory worker Devon Townsend admitted to a court in Albuquerque, New Mexico of stalking Chester Bennington lead singer with Linkin Park. Townsend used US government computers to obtain his personal information, accessing Bennington’s e-mail account and mobile phone voicemail.

1955 – Born on this day, Mike Corby, The Babys 1965 – The Beatles played the final night of a two week European tour at the Plaza de Toros Monumental in Barcelona, Spain. 1967 – Beatles John, George, and Paul turn up at a party thrown in the Monkees’ honor in London. 1969 – Brian Jones is found dead in his swimming pool in Hartford, England. The Rolling Stones founder’s death was later ruled to be an accident. 1969 – Some 78,000 people show up for this year’s Newport Jazz Festival in Rhode Island. The big crowd may have had a bit to do with the non-jazz headliners James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Johnny Winter, and Blood, Sweat & Tears. 1969 – John Lennon holds a press conference to announce the release of “Give Peace a Chance,” but can’t show up as he and Yoko are recovering from a car crash in Scotland. Ringo fills in instead. 1970 – The Allman Brothers Band appears at the Atlanta Pop Festival. 1971 – Jim Morrison of the Doors dies of a heart attack in Paris at the age of 27. 1973 – As the Ziggy Stardust tour comes to a close David Bowie announces, “it is the last show I will ever do.” 1981 – Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman releases the single “(Si Si) Je Suis un Rock Star” on his own label. 1981 – Robby Krieger, Ray Manzarek, and John Densmore lead fans in a graveside memorial for Jim Morrison in Paris. 1982 – Van Halen hits #38 with “Dancin’ in the Street”. 1995 – Stone Temple Pilot Scott Weiland is in court pleading not guilty to drug charges. 2000 – DirecTV broadcasts the 1939 film “The Wizard Of Oz,” with Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side Of The Moon” in sync on the alternate Second Audio Program (SAP). While no one involved with Pink Floyd has ever admitted to any link between the bands seminal 1973 album and the classic film, urban legend purports that the album was conceived as an alternate soundtrack to Dorothy’s adventures in Oz. 2002 – Sir Elton John became the first person to be made an honorary doctorate from the Royal Academy Of Music. 2002 – The wife of Ozzy Osbourne, Sharon Osbourne underwent an emergency operation after being diagnosed with cancer. 2003 – The White Stripes’ Jack White (the talented one with the guitar) announces he’s producing tracks for C&W legend Loretta Lynn. 2004 – David Crosby was fined $5,000 (£2,745) by a US court after admitting attempted criminal possession of a weapon. 2007 – Pete Doherty escaped jail after a judge decided to defer sentencing him for drugs offences on condition he went into rehab.

1941 – The ageless Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones is born in Islington. 1949 – Roy Bittan, pianist with Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band, is born. 1956 – Elvis Presley records “Don’t Be Cruel,” “Hound Dog” and “Anyway You Want Me” in New York. It marks the first time he uses the Jordanaires as background singers. 1964 – Paul McCartney is at the piano as Liverpudlian diva Cilla Black records the Beatles’ “It’s for You.” 1969 – Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell quit the Jimi Hendrix Experience, however there is some good news for rock enthusiasts as Leslie West and Felix Pappalardi team up to create Mountain. 1976 – Brian Wilson rejoins the Beach Boys for the first time on stage since deciding he’d rather spend his life in bed. Aside from singing “In My Room” at the Anaheim, Calif., performance, he mostly sits staring at his keyboard. 1980 – Bob Weir and Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead are arrested with their manager, Danny Rifken, on charges of inciting a riot. They were alleged to have interfered with a drug-related arrest during a concert at the San Diego Sports Arena. 1981 – Bruce Springsteen plays his first show at New Jersey’s Brendan Byrne Arena. He sold out six shows at the venue in the space of an hour. 1982 – Clash drummer Topper Headon is charged with stealing a bus stop sign. 1984 – This Day in Dio: Dio release their album The Last in Line. 1986 – Bob Dylan and the Grateful Dead perform together at a show in Akron, Ohio. 1915 – Bluesman Willie Dixon is born in Vicksburg, Miss. 1945 – Deborah Harry is born in Miami. 1952 – Comedian/actor/writer/Blues Brother and House of Blues co-founder Dan Aykroyd is born in Ottawa, Canada. 1968 – John Lennon opens an exhibition of his drawings titled “You Are Here.” 1968 – John Lennon and Yoko Ono are hospitalized after an auto accident in Scotland. 1969 – The Doors release their album The Soft Parade. 1970 – Jimi Hendrix records his first session at Electric Ladyland Studios, New York. 1973 – Bob Dylan releases his soundtrack to Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. 1973 – Laurens Hammond, who invented the Hammond organ, dies at age 78. 1975 – Former Beatle Ringo Starr divorces his wife, Maureen Cox 1979 – The Doobie Brothers celebrate their 10th anniversary with an all-star jam session at the Friar’s Club in Los Angeles. 1981 – Rushton Moreve of Steppenwolf dies in an auto wreck at age 35. 1987 – The Grateful Dead release their In the Dark album, featuring the single “Touch of Grey.” Rolling Stone says, “This album bespeaks an effortlessness long absent from their oeuvre.” 1995 – Gravel-voiced DJ Wolfman Jack dies of a heart attack in Belvidere, N.C., at age 57 1997 – Radiohead release their third album, OK Computer. 1998 – A track from metal-funk band White Zombie’s 1993 Geffen album “La Sexorcisto: Devil Music Volume One” has the dubious distinction of being played repeatedly to ward off paparazzi at the wedding of Barbra Streisand and James Brolin. 2003 – The New York Post reports that it’s all over for Kid Rock and Pam Anderson. The actress tells the Las Vegas Sun, “We remain good friends, but we have two different lives right now. I am with my kids and I couldn’t be happier.” 2008 – Whitesnake guitarist Mel Galley, died at the age of 60 from cancer of the oesophagus. Galley also played with Trapeze, Glenn Hughes, Cozy Powell and the Blue Jays.
