1932 – Albert Collins (US blues singer/guitarist) is born 1947 – Wishbone Ash bassist Martin Turner is born in Torquay 1948 – Cub Koda, who wrote the memorable anthem “Smokin’ in the Boys’ Room” as part of Brownsville Station, is born in Detroit. 1962 – The Beatles sign a revised contract with their manager, Brian Epstein. 1967 – Pink Floyd land in New York to begin their first American tour 1970 – Funeral of Jimi Hendrix held in Seattle, Washington 1970 – In Milan, 2,000 fans riot when they’re denied entry to a Rolling Stones concert. 1971 – Gene Vincent cuts a session for British radio in London. It will be the last time Gene is in a studio. The “Be-Bop-A-Lula” singer would die on October 12, 1971. 1973 – Riding high on the success of Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd begin sessions for their new album, declaring they intend to use only household objects to make the music. Very avant-garde. They later ditched the idea to record Wish You Were Here. 1977 – The Madison Square Garden Hall of Fame inducts its first rocker, Elton John. 1977 – Drummer Rat Scabies quits punk pioneers the Damned 1983 – By reaching No. 7 in US with ‘Metal Health’, Quiet Riot achieve most successful debut LP in heavy metal history to date 1983 – Robert Plant wraps up his first North American tour at Vancouver’s PNE Coliseum. 1995 – Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Hootie & The Blowfish and the Dave Matthews Band raise close to $1 million at the Farm Aid concert in Louisville, Ky. 2000 – In Sydney, Men at Work and INXS perform at the Olympic closing ceremonies. 2003 – New York police refuse to give Bruce Springsteen an escort from his Shea Stadium gig after the Boss performs “American Skin (41 Shots),” about the shooting of Amadou Diallo. 2004 – Bruce Palmer, former bassist with West Coast folk rock legends Buffalo Springfield dies of a heart attack. He was 58. 2008 – Mike Pinder of the Moody Blues turns on the website ‘songwars.net’. The goal of the site is to intice song writers to submit songs for prize money and prizes while getting their song heard by industry moguls 2011 – KISS rocker Gene Simmons tied the knot with his longtime girlfriend, Shannon Tweed

1947 – Marc Bolan (Marc Feld) of T. Rex is born in London. 1963 – New York promoter Sid Bernstein contacts Brian Epstein. Sid wants to know more about these Beatles he keeps hearing about, even though they have yet to score a hit in the U.S. Bernstein would go on to promote the band’s famed gigs at Shea Stadium. 1964 – Born on this day, Robby Takac, bass, Goo Goo Dolls 1966 – Chas Chandler offers Noel Redding the job of bass player in Jimi Hendrix’s new band, the Experience. 1967 – Paul McCartney and John Lennon appear on The David Frost Show, but all they want to talk about is how wonderful the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is. 1969 – Tragedy strikes David Crosby, as the CSN member’s girlfriend Christine Gail Hinton dies in a car crash north of San Francisco. 1971 – Yes begin a British tour with Rick Wakeman behind the keyboards for the first time. 1977 – It’s a peaceful time over at New York’s Palladium, where Foghat (“Slow Ride”) play a benefit. The money raised will help the New York Public Library buy a collection of rare blues records for its Rodgers & Hammerstein Archives. 1977 – Sound techie Jay Sloatman brawls with a crew of Lynyrd Skynyrd roadies who believe he deliberately cut the sound during the band’s set at the Louisville Convention Center in Kentucky. The roadies claim that Sloatman attacked them when they asked him to leave. 1987 – L.A.’s Coconut Grove plays host to an all-star gathering as Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Tom Waits, and Elvis Costello join Roy Orbison onstage to tape a TV special. 1988 – John Lennon gets a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 1993 – George Harrison and David Crosby make guest appearances on the fifth season premiere of the Fox animated comedy series “The Simpsons.” 1997 – Fleetwood Mac’s reunion show at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J., grosses a house record of $1,094,520. 2004 – Troubled grunge poster child Courtney Love is sued by a Los Angeles travel agency who claims she owes them nearly $50,000 for unpaid airline tickets. 2006 – Farm Aid co-founders Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young are joined by Dave Matthews, Steel Pulse, Gov’t Mule, Jerry Lee Lewis,Steve Earle and Allison Moorer for the organization’s 21st anniversary concert at the Tweeter Center in Camden, N.J. 2007 – Foo Fighters went to No.1 on the UK album chart with ‘Echoes Silence Patience & Grace’ the bands sixth studio album and second UK No.1 2010 -Black Country Communion’s self titled debut album has charted at #13 in the Official UK Top 40 Album Chart.

1935 – Jerry Lee Lewis is born in Ferriday, La. His parents later mortgage their home to buy him his first piano. 1948 – Grand Funk Railroad’s Mark Farner is born in Flint, Mich. 1961 – Three days after Bob Dylan begins his two-week stint supporting the Greenbriar Boys at Greenwich Village’s Gerde’s Folk City, critic and future Dylan biographer Robert Shelton catches his act. 1963 – The Rolling Stones open their first British tour supporting the Everly Brothers and Bo Diddley at the New Victoria Theatre in London. 1966 – At London’s Birdland club, Eric Burdon’s New Animals are holding auditions for a new guitarist. The band members are unimpressed by Noel Redding’s guitar skills, but invite him to play bass. He jams with Chas Chandler’s new find Jimi Hendrix and the two head off to a pub. Redding would go on to play bass with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. 1967 – Drummer Mickey Hart joins the Grateful Dead. 1976 – Happy birthday Jerry Lee Lewis style Trying to shoot a soda bottle, Lewis instead hits his bassist twice in the chest. With a .357 Magnum. 1977 – After the death of his friend Marc Bolan of T.Rex, David Bowie sets up a trust fund for the glam rocker’s son Rolan. 1989 – With a full-scale Eagles reunion still five years away, Glenn Frey joins Don Henley onstage for the first time since 1980 at a concert in LA. Throughout the decade, band members received several lucrative offers to reunite, but declined them all. 1989 - Bruce Springsteen stopped in Matt’s Saloon in Prescott, AZ to jam with the house band for an hour. He overheard a barmaid discussing financial problems & one week later, the barmaid received a check from Springsteen for $100,000. 1990 –Twins Nelson top the charts with “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection.” 1996 – Alanis Morissette finishes her first U.S. tour in Houston, Texas. 2003 - Ozzy Osbourne announced that he was writing a Broadway musical based on the life of Russian monk Rasputin.

Taken from their album ‘Zenyatta Mondatta’ and the best selling single of 1980. 1991 – Bryan Adams was awarded the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia. 1991 – Guns N’ Roses released 2 albums ‘Use Your Illusion I’ and ‘Use Your Illusion II’ which debut at number 1 and number 2 on the UK album chart. 1943 – Randy Bachman of Bachman-Turner Overdrive is born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. 1947 – Happy birthday to Meat Loaf, who is born in Dallas 1964 – In England, Ringo Starr and Beatles manager Brian Epstein appear as judges in a talent contest to benefit the Oxfam charity. 1967 –The Beatles spend the day at Abbey Road recording string parts and themselves for “I Am the Walrus.” 1973 – Rolling Stone announces that guitarist Carlos Santana has added the name “Devadip” since becoming a disciple of Sri Chinmoy. The name means “the Lamp of the Light Supreme.” 1973 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “We’re an American Band,” Grand Funk. The single is pressed on gold-colored vinyl. 1979 – Elton John collapses onstage during a show at Los Angeles’ Universal Amphitheater. After a 10-minute break he returns to continue with the concert. He’s later said to be suffering from exhaustion coupled with a case of the flu. 1986 - Metallica bassist Cliff Burton was killed in Sweden when their tour bus skidded off the highway & flipped onto the ground, he was thrown through the window of the bus, which later fell on top of Burton, crushing him to death. He was 24 years old. 1997- Bob Dylan performs at the World Eucharistic Congress in Bologna, Italy, before the pope. The two chat for about a minute after Dylan sings “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall.” 1999 – Atlanta declares today ZZ Top Day. The band is actually from El Paso, Texas. 2000 – U2 perform two songs from its upcoming album on the roof of Dublin’s Clarence Hotel, a property owned by the band. 2003 – Great White drummer Derrick Pontier is hurt in a car collision in Allentown, Pa. He was heading to a gig benefiting victims of the Rhode Island club fire which killed 100 people during a Great White show. 2007: Van Halen kicked off their reunion tour with David Lee Roth at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena. It was their first tour with Roth in 23 years. 2008 – Pink Floyd’s manager Bryan Morrison died after spending over two years in a coma. Morrison suffered severe brain injuries in a polo accident at the Royal Berkshire Polo Club, England in 2006, and never recovered.

1945 – Vocalist Bryan Ferry of Roxy Music is born in Durham, England. 1961 – Bob Dylan gets a steady gig. He spends the next two weeks at Gerde’s Folk City in New York’s Greenwich Village, opening for the Greenbriar Boys, a local bluegrass group. 1964 – The Kinks release their single “You Really Got Me.” 1965 – Queen Elizabeth II awards the Beatles the Order of the British Empire. John Lennon later returns his to protest poor sales of “Cold Turkey,” Vietnam, and whatever else was bugging him that morning. 1968 – Rolling Stone Brian Jones is found guilty of marijuana possession. A judge fines him $150. 1969 – Promoter Bill Graham opens the Fillmore West in San Francisco. It quickly becomes the epicenter of the city’s psychedelic-band boom. 1970 – John Lennon begins recording sessions for what will become his therapeutic John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band album. 1974 – John Lennon releases his solo album Walls and Bridges. Featuring the Elton John-assisted single “Whatever Gets You Thru the Night,” it becomes his last album of original material for six years. 1979 – The Clash release their first single in America. “I Fought the Law,” a cover of the Bobby Fuller Four number, fails to chart. 1981 - Bruce Dickinson replaced Paul Di’Anno as the singer for Iron Maiden. 1986 – Having been delayed by nearly a year, Mick Jagger’s longform video Running Out of Luck finally arrives in stores to scant notice. 1988 – Keith Richards releases his first solo album, Talk Is Cheap 1989 – Paul McCartney begins his Get Back tour – in which he plays several Lennon/McCartney compositions live for the first time – at the Drammenshallen, in Dramen, Norway. 1996 – The Grateful Dead unveil their new line of ties at a New York art gallery. 1999 – Deep Purple play London’s Royal Albert Hall accompanied by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. 2003 – British singer Robert Palmer, best known for his dapper dressing style and his iconic videos in the 1980s for songs like “Addicted to Love,” dies. He is 54. 2003 – Metallica’s James Hetfield puts his restored black 1967 Chevrolet Camaro up for sale – on eBay! 2004 – Green Day top the UK charts with their punk-rock concept album American Idiot.

1936 – Bluesman Roosevelt “Booba” Barnes is born. 1943 – John Locke, keyboardist with the acid rock band Spirit, is born in Los Angeles. 1945 – The Average White Band guitarist and vocalist Onnie McIntyre is born in Lennox Town, Scotland. 1964 – Brian Epstein reveals that a consortium of American businessmen tried to buy out the Beatles’ management contract. Despite an offer of 3.5 million pounds, Epstein turned them down. 1965 – The Beatles’ Saturday-morning cartoon series premieres on ABC. 1966 – Jimi Hendrix’s second day in London is an eventful one. He’s in bed with Cathy Etchingham, a 19-year-old hairdresser who has taken his fancy, when Keith Richards’ ex Linda Keith bursts into his hotel room, steals a guitar she bought for him in New York, climbs under the covers, and says he can only have the guitar back if he sleeps with her. This is the ’60s, but Hendrix still declines the offer. 1967 – At Abbey Road, the Beatles record “Fool on the Hill.” 1969 – John Lennon records “Cold Turkey,” about his battle with heroin addition, with a band including Eric Clapton, Beatles associate Klaus Voormann, Yoko Ono, and Ringo Starr. 1976 – In America, Boston’s self-titled debut enters the albums chart. It would go on to become the fastest-selling debut album in chart history. 1976 – They meant well. Wings perform a benefit concert in Venice’s St. Mark’s Square to raise money to restore art damaged by the canal water. However, the 25,000-strong crowd only causes the square to sink deeper into the brine, and water rises up through the cracks in the paving. 1980 – Drummer John Bonham of Led Zeppelin is found dead in his bed after a drinking binge. 1990 – Dave Grohl, former drummer of the Washington DC band Scream, joins Nirvana. 2000 – A collection of 1965 writings by Janis Joplin to then-fiance Peter DeBlanc go up for auction on eBay. 2000 – U2 frontman Bono turns up in Prague, where he meets with the World Bank president to discuss his debt-relief plan for the Third World. 2003 – Welsh power trio the Stereophonics announce they have fired drummer Stuart Cable over “commitment issues.” 2006: Steven Tyler made a cameo appearance on Two and a Half Men playing himself as a noisy, obnoxious neighbor. 2008 – Paul McCartney announced today that he will perform in Israel to the delight of many fans. It has been over 40 years since The Beatles tried to perform there and were shut out by the government.

1941 – Rock photographer and Beatle spouse Linda McCartney is born in Scarsdale, N.Y. She also sang backing vocals with Wings, but let’s not speak ill of the dead. 1946 – Guitarist of Fairport Convention is born. 1966 – Jimi Hendrix arrives in London in the company of his new manager, Chas Chandler. Chandler was a bassist with the original Animals and discovered Hendrix playing in a Greenwich Village go-go club. On the flight to England, Hendrix changes the spelling of his name from “Jimmy” to “Jimi.” 1971 – John Lennon appears as a guest on The Dick Cavett Show. 1977 – Styx release their single “Come Sail Away.” It becomes their second top 10 hit, peaking at No. 8. 1978 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Kiss You All Over,” Exile. 1989 – The group Chopped Liver make their debut on the L’Chaim to Life Telethon ’89 in Israel, featuring Bob Dylan on flute and recorder, actor Harry Dean Stanton, and Dylan’s son-in-law Peter Himmelman on guitar. 1991 – Nirvana’s breakthrough album “Nevermind” is released. 1993 – Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler reaches a $2.5 million settlement in his lawsuit against the group and managers. Adler was thrown out of the band because he couldn’t kick his heroin habit. The agreement was reached shortly before the lawsuit would have gone to the Superior Court jury. 1994 – Eric Clapton is tonight’s special musical guest on the season premiere of Saturday Night Live. 1998 – Former Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler, 33, is sentenced to 150 days in jail for beating two women he dated and for violating his probation from an earlier domestic violence conviction. 1998 - Steven Tyler threw out the first pitch at the Montreal Expos-St. Louis Cardinals baseball game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis. 2003 – Dave Matthews Band plays to over 100,000 people at charity show in New York’s Central Park. Warren Haynes joins them onstage for a version of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer.”

1947 – Neal Smith, drummer with Alice Cooper, is born in Akron, Ohio. 1949 – Bruce Springsteen is born in Freehold, N.J. 1959 – Songwriter Martin Page is born in Southampton, England. If you’ve heard Starship’s “We Built This City” or Heart’s “These Dreams,” you know his work. 1960 – In Hamburg, the young Beatles with Stu Sutcliffe cut versions of “Fever,” “Summertime,” and “September Song.” 1966 – The Rolling Stones kick off a British tour at London’s Royal Albert Hall, supported by an all-star cast of Ike & Tina Turner, the Yardbirds, Peter Jay & the Jaywalkers, the Kings of Rhythm Orchestra, Jimmy Thomas, Bobby John, and Long John Baldry. 1969 – In today’s issue of Illinois’ Northern Star newspaper, a journalist rounds up the clues that point to the death of Paul McCartney. They include a mumble that sounds like “I buried Paul” in the fade to “Strawberry Fields Forever” and numerous things to do with walruses. 1972 – Mott the Hoople release their single “All the Young Dudes.” Not so much a comeback single as life support system, the song was written for them by David Bowie to encourage the band to stay together. 1978 – Foreigner release their second album, Double Vision. 1980 – Bob Marley collapsed on stage during a concert at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Marley had collapsed in New York’s Central Park while jogging, two days before and was told to immediately cancel the US leg, but flew to Pittsburgh to perform one final performance. 1980 – David Bowie opens in the title role of “The Elephant Man” on Broadway. 1991: Guns N’ Roses announced that guitarist Izzy Stadlin was leaving the band. Gilby Clarke would shortly replace him. 1999 – Garbage’s Shirley Manson unveils her own line of lip gloss. 2006 – Neil Young was named artist of the year at the Americana Honors and Awards at the fifth annual event in Nashville, Tennessee. The 60-year-old singer-songwriter released the protest album Living With War this year. 2010: Heart guitarist & singer Nancy Wilson filed for divorce from her husband of 22 years, film director Cameron Crowe.

1951 - David Coverdale of the groups Whitesnake and Deep Purple is born in Saltburton By The Sea, England. 1960 – Joan Jett is born in Philadelphia. 1965 – Grace Slick makes her singing debut with San Francisco’s Great Society in North Beach, Calif. 1965 – The Who kick off their Scandinavian tour by mostly kicking one another in Copenhagen. Roger Daltrey is nearly thrown out of the band after punching Keith Moon. 1967 – Filming their Magical Mystery Tour, the Beatles shoot the scene in which Ringo gets his tickets from John Lennon. The band also appears on the cover of today’s issue of Time magazine. 1980 – John Lennon signs a new record deal with Geffen Records as he prepares to release Double Fantasy, his first album of new material in six years. 1985 – Champaign, Ill., hosts the first Farm Aid. Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson, and Bob Dylan with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers inaugurate the charity concert, which raises $10 million for beleaguered farmers and becomes an annual event. 1990 – Nirvana plays the Motor Sports International Garage with Mudhoney’s Dan Peters on Drums. Peters quickly leaves the band. 1992 – Bruce Springsteen’s recording of MTV Unplugged loses the “un” after he decides he’d rather go electric. 1998 – White Zombie calls it a night. Bassist Sean Yseult confirms that the 13-year-old hard rock group has decided to break up. 1999 – Bono meets the pope at the Vatican. The pope offers his support for Bono’s Third World-debt-ending initiative Jubilee 2000. 1947 – Don Felder of the Eagles is born in Topanga, Calif. 1954 – Motorhead drummer “Filthy” Phil Taylor is born in Chesterfield, England. 1965 – The Moody Blues play their first major gig at London’s Royal Albert Hall as part of a bill called Brian Epstein’s Evening of Popular Music. They share manager Epstein with the Beatles. 1968 – Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum gives its Beatles statues their fifth hair and clothes makeover in four years, in keeping with the lads’ taste for hippie fashions. 1971 – Pink Floyd give their album Meddle a quadraphonic mix at London’s Command Studios. 1974 – Bachman-Turner Overdrive release “You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet.” 1979 – U.N. Secretary General Kurt Waldheim makes an appeal to the Beatles to reunite to benefit the Vietnamese boat people. 1987 – Bassist Jaco Pastorius of Blood, Sweat & Tears dies after being beaten up in Florida. He had been trying to break in to Fort Lauderdale’s Midnight Club. He was 35. 1991 – Status Quo play four British arenas in 11 hours. The Guinness Book of World Records is on hand to confirm that, yep, it’s a record. 1993 – Nirvana’s album “In Utero” is released. 1999 – Hole bassist Melissa Auf Der Maur leaves the grunge band to embark on a solo career. She changes her mind and joins the Smashing Pumpkins instead. 2000 – Bono appears on Capitol Hill in an effort to get American lawmakers to agree to his debt relief plan for the Third World. 2000 – Phil Collins, Mike Rutherford, and Tony Banks reform as Genesis for a one-off performance at the London Hilton during the British Music Roll of Honour gala, organized by the Music Managers Forum. The act’s manager, Tony Smith receives the Peter Grant Award for outstanding achievement at the event. 2004 – Singer Cat Stevens (“Wild World”), who changed his name to Yusuf Islam after becoming a Muslim, is denied entry into the United States after his name is found on an anti-terrorist watch list. Stevens denies links to the terror group Hamas. 2009: Eddie Van Halen made a cameo appearance on the season premiere of the seventh season of Two and a Half Men.

They form the rock group Nelson and hit No. 1 in 1990 with “(Can’t Live Without Your) Love and Affection.” 1968 – Ben Shepherd, bassist for Seattle grunge outfit Soundgarden is born in Okinawa, Japan. 1969 – No. 1 on both the American and British albums charts today is Blind Faith, the only album by the supergroup that features Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Ginger Baker. 1969 – The Beatles’ publishing company, Northern Songs, is bought by Associated TV for 1 million pounds, while their new business affairs manager, Allen Klein, negotiates an increased royalty rate for the band with EMI/Capitol. 1970 - The Doors’ singer Jim Morrison was found guilty in Miami of exposing himself onstage during a concert the previous year though he was acquitted on charges of lewd and lascivious behavior. 1971 - Peter Frampton departed Humble Pie to start a successful solo career. His debut solo album Wind of Change was released the following year. 1972 - Paul and Linda McCartney were arrested for growing a crop of marijuana at their farmhouse in Campbeltown, Scotland. 1973 – Jim Croce dies in a plane crash in Natchitoches, La. 1973 – Los Angeles’ Roxy club opens with a show by Neil Young & Crazy Horse. 1983 – Former Blind Faith members Steve Winwood and Eric Clapton are among the performers at the ARMS benefit concert at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The concert raises money for research into multiple sclerosis. 1991 – Nirvana kicks off a six-week U.S. tour. 2003 – Rocker Melissa Etheridge exchanges vows with her partner, actress Tammy Lynn Michaels, in California, in spite of a law preventing homosexuals from marrying in the state. 2005 – “New Sensation” hit-makers INXS select J.D. Fortune (surely not his real name) to be their front man in the final episode of the reality series Rock Star: INXS. 2006 – The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards says he’s finally given up drugs … because they’re not strong enough. “I think the quality’s gone down,” 2010 - Leonard Skinner, the gym teacher who inspired the name Lynyrd Skynyrd died of Alzheimer’s disease at a nursing home in Jacksonville, FL. He was 77 years old.

1950 – Michael Hossack, drummer with the Doobie Brothers, is born in Paterson, N.J. 1951 – Bassist Dee Dee Ramone of the Ramones is born in Fort Lee, Va. 1964 – The Beatles are involved in a bomb scare as a phone caller says there is an explosive on their flight to Dallas. It turns out to be a false alarm. 1965 – Today in the British pop paper Disc, you can read “My Life as a Stone’s Wife” by Bill Wyman’s wife, Diane 1966 – The Doors appeared at Bido Lito’s, Hollywood, California. Also on the bill The Seeds. 1967 – In London’s Raymond Revue Bar, the Beatles shoot the striptease scene for The Magical Mystery Tour. 1970 – Jimi Hendrix is found dead from barbiturate overdose. 1971 – Pink Floyd performs at the Classical Music Festival in Montreux, Switzerland. They become the first rock group to play the festival, performing their work “Atom Heart Mother.” 1972 – In London you can visit the Rock at the Oval festival. Headliners are the Who, but the bill is filled out by Mott the Hoople and the Faces, whose Kenny Jones would later sub for the deceased Keith Moon on drums. 1974 – Listeners tuning in to New York’s WNEW-FM tonight might hear a soothing Liverpudlian voice taking them into the night. The guest DJ is John Lennon. 1976 – At Don Kirshner’s Rock Music Awards, Fleetwood Mac win Best Group and Best Album for Fleetwood Mac. Their single “Say You Love Me” is currently at No. 11 on the charts. Peter Frampton is awarded Rock Personality of the Year. 1980 – Amsterdam’s Paradise Club is the setting for a two-day festival celebrating the life of Jimi Hendrix, which ended 10 years ago today. The 1,100 attendees watch Hendrix films and an appearance by the Noel Redding Band, with Mitch Mitchell guesting on drums. 1983 – Members of Kiss appear on MTV without their trademark makeup. 1991 – Rob Tyner, lead singer with the MC5, dies at age 47 of a heart attack. 1997 – The Rolling Stones play Chicago’s Double Door Club as a warm-up for their Bridges to Babylon tour. The Smashing Pumpkins’ Billy Corgan is in the audience, but he pays the $7 admission along with the other 400 lucky punters. 2000 – Rick Springfield is arrested for alleged spousal assault after police discover “minor injuries” on his wife. He’s released just in time to tape an episode of Behind the Music. 2004 – Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp and Neil Young perform at the 19th annual Farm Aid in Auburn, Washington. Dave Matthews, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, Trick Pony and rock ‘n’ roller Jerry Lee Lewis also perform for the farmers. 2006 – Sir Cliff Richard unveiled a plaque to mark a tiny basement said to be the birthplace of British rock and roll, fifty years after the “2 i’s” coffee bar opened in London’s Old Compton Street. 2008 – One of the bigger breakout hits of the Toronto Film Festival was It Might Get Loud, a documentary that consists entirely of Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge swapping stories, expounding on their experiences and of course jamming with each other. 2008 – Unreleased material Jimi Hendrix wrote and recorded with twin brothers Arthur and Albert Allen — a.k.a. the Ghetto Fighters — may finally be released through software/multimedia company we-R-you

1950 – Vocalist Fee Waybill (John Waldo) of the Tubes is born in Omaha, Neb. 1967 – The Doors appear on TV’s “Ed Sullivan Show.” Sullivan asks Jim Morrison to omit the line “Girl, we can’t get much higher” from the song “Light My Fire.” Morrison agrees, then sings it anyway. 1967 – On The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, in one of the greatest rock TV moments ever, Keith Moon rigs his drum set to explode at the end of the Who’s performance of “My Generation.” The resulting detonation cuts Moon’s leg, singes Pete Townshend’s hair, and does some serious damage to his hearing. 1984 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Missing You,” John Waite. 1991- Slash says the logic behind Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II is that fans can buy one and tape the other off their friends. Regardless, the band sells half a million copies of the two records in two hours. 1997 – The Fleetwood Mac reunion tour in support of the band’s new album “The Dance,” gets under way at the Meadows in Hartford, Conn. 1998 – Hootie & The Blowfish make an emergency stop in Denver during their American Airlines flight from New York to Los Angeles when a passenger described as “extremely agitated” reportedly turns violent after meeting the band. 2003 – Former Smashing Pumpkins frontman and Zwan leader Billy Corgan presents a multimedia poetry performance in his Chicago hometown, opening the Poetry Center of Chicago’s 31st Annual Reading Series at the Art Institute of Chicago’s Rubloff Auditorium. 2003 – U2’s Bono meets with President George W. Bush to discuss giving more money to AIDS initiatives. In a press conference after their talk, he says, “I’m not here peddling a cause. Seven thousand people dying a day is not a cause. It’s an emergency.” 2004 –Black Rebel Motorcycle Club announce that drummer Nick Jago has left the band, but that “the doors always open for him to play with BRMC.” 2010 – Ozzy Osbourne cancels German show due to back troubles 2010 – American Idol has new judges… News Corp.’s Fox will announce next week that recording artists Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are joining “American Idol” as judges

1925 – B.B. King (Riley King) is born in Itta Bena, Miss. 1948 – Drummer Kenny Jones is born in London. He will go on to beat skins for the Faces and the Who. 1948 – Ron Blair, bassist with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, is born in Macon, Ga. He left in 1982 after the release of Long After Dark. 1963 – Richard Marx is born in Chicago. 1965 – To kick off Shindig!‘s second season, the Rolling Stones perform their hit “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Other guests include the Kinks and the Byrds. 1966 – Bassist Pete Quaife calls it quits with the Kinks and is replaced by John Dalton. Quaife later returns, but finally walks out on the band in March 1969, moving to Denmark. 1966 – A slow day at Britain’s Houses of Parliament is enlivened when MP Tom Drilberg asks the House to “deplore” a magistrate who condemned the Rolling Stones as “complete morons … who wear filthy clothes.” 1970 – Led Zeppelin finally knock the Beatles out of their position as the U.K.’s most popular group in a Melody Maker poll 1972 – John Lennon & Yoko Ono release Some Time in New York City. The album comes free with a second disc that features an atrocious live performance in which the Mothers of Invention back the couple. 1977 – Marc Bolan of T. Rex dies in an auto accident in London. 1985 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “Money for Nothing,” Dire Straits. 1993 – The Mill Valley, Calif., home of rock singer Grace Slick is destroyed by fire when sparks from welders’ torches accidentally ignite dry grass. Damages are estimated at about $700,000. 1998 – Members of ’70s British rock outfit Mott The Hoople play together for the first time in some 24 years at a one-off performance at the Virgin Megastore on London’s Oxford Street. 2003 – Rock wild man Ted Nugent is sued by a New Hampshire woman who claims he’s the father of her eight-year-old son and hasn’t ponied up the necessary child support. 2004 – Green Day unveil their new rock opera, American Idiot, on the first date of their national tour in Hollywood, Calif. 2005 – A fan-run museum dedicated exclusively to the Ramones opens in Berlin, Germany. 2005 – A judge orders Courtney Love to return to rehab for six months as part of her sentence for violating probation. 2005 – Motley Crue’s Vince Neil slips and tears his calf onstage during a reunion concert in Atlanta. “I just felt something snap in my leg,” the singer says. “I just couldn’t go on.” 2006 – R.E.M. is inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in Atlanta 2008 – In just a three-day sales window, Metallica’s “Death Magnetic” skates close to the half million mark and will lead The Billboard 200. 2008 –Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour has praised late bandmate Richard Wright for his “vitality, spark and humour”.

She went on to be the original female vocalist in Jefferson Airplane before Grace Slick arrived in 1966. 1942 – Bassist Lee Dorman of Iron Butterfly and Captain Beyond is born in St. Louis. 1960 – Mitch Dorge, drummer with Crash Test Dummies (“Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm”), is born. 1963 – The Rolling Stones perform at the Great Pop Prom at London’s Royal Albert Hall. 1966 – John Lennon makes his first appearance away from the Beatles in the role of Private Gripweed in Richard Lester’s film ‘How I Won the War’. He writes “Strawberry Fields Forever” during the filming. 1969 – Jon Lord’s ego is indulged as Deep Purple record Concerto for Rock Band and Orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It’s awful. 1969 – Ed Sullivan, a great patron of rock, makes his own stab at musical stardom with his recording “The Sulli-Gulli.” Credited to the Ed Sullivan Singers & Orchestra, it fails to chart. 1974 – In an onstage accident in Denver, Uriah Heep’s Gary Thain is nearly electrocuted. Fortunately, the bassist survives. 1979 – Bob Dylan releases his album Slow Train Coming. 1982 – Queen performs at the Great Western Forum in Inglewood, California, in what turns out to be their last U.S. concert. 1998 – The Band’s tenth and final studio album, ‘Jubilation,’ is released on the River North label. Original members Levon Helm, Rick Danko and Garth Hudson are joined by such friends as Eric Clapton and John Hiatt. 2003 – Country legend Johnny Cash is buried next to his wife June Carter Cash in Hendersonville, Tenn 2003 – Billy Corgan announces his post-Smashing Pumpkins project Zwan are no more. “”There’s not enough time to tell you what happened” he says. 2004 – Johnny Ramone, guitarist in New York City punk rock pioneers the Ramones, dies at home in Los Angeles, California. He is 55 and had been suffering from prostate cancer. 2006 – The Knack sue Run-D.M.C. for sampling their “My Sharona” on the hit “It’s Tricky.” 2008 - Pink Floyd keyboardist Richard Wright died of an undisclosed form of cancer at his home in the U.K. He was 65 years old.

1946 - Pete Agnew-bassist for Nazareth born in Dumferline, Scotland. 1949 – Steven Gaines, guitarist with Lynyrd Skynyrd, is born in Seneca, Mo. 1950 – Free guitarist Paul Kossoff is born in Hampstead, England. 1963 – In the U.K., the No. 1 single is the Beatles’ “She Loves You.” It becomes England’s best-selling single until the record is broken by Paul McCartney’s “Mull of Kintyre” in 1977. 1964 – It’s announced that Beatles manager Brian Epstein will record his own album, reading from his book A Cellarful of Noise. 1968 – In one of the daffier examples of government policy, 40 foreign officials of the U.S. Information Agency attend a Blood, Sweat & Tears concert in Washington, D.C. The reason? It seems the concert will familiarize them with cultural developments in the U.S. 1968 – What’s next for the Who’s Pete Townshend? He tells Rolling Stone today that he’s working on a rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy. 1969 – Genesis play their first paying gig at an English cottage owned by Peter Gabriel’s former Sunday school teacher. Hence the name. 1978 – The Grateful Dead play a concert at the foot of Egypt’s Great Pyramid. There’s more than just T-shirt sales at stake. The band intends to get the Arabs and Israelis to settle their differences to music. 1981 – Director Alan Parker begins production on Pink Floyd the Wall. The film was originally to interpolate live footage of the band performing at Earls Court, but instead tells the story of a confused rocker portrayed by Boomtown Rat Bob Geldof. 1997: Pete Townshend unveiled an English Heritage Blue Plaque at 23 Brook Street in London to mark where Jimi Hendrix had lived in 1968-1969. 1999 – Sheryl Crow and friends stage a free concert for 25,000 lucky fans in New York’s Central Park 2006 – Singer, actress, drug survivor and onetime Mick Jagger girlfriend Marianne Faithfull announces she is being treated for breast cancer. 2007 – The Beatles-inspired movie, “Across The Universe” opens. 2008 – Metallica started a two week run at No.1 on the UK album chart with their ninth album ‘Death Magnetic’. 2008 – Singer Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden was one of the pilots who flew specially chartered flights after 85,000 tourists were stranded in the US, the Caribbean, Africa and Europe after Britain’s third-largest tour operator went into administration.

Elton was unhappy after the audience were slow in leaving a VIP dinner before the concert, Elton left the building and flew home on his private jet without playing a note. 2005 – The home where Jimi Hendrix grew up in Seattle was saved from demolition after a new location was agreed at the last minute. The James Marshall Hendrix Foundation and the City of Seattle agreed to renovate the building into a community centre opposite the cemetery where the guitarist was buried in 1970. 2005 – The Sex Pistols were among new names added to a celebrity Walk of Fame in Covent Garden London.

1952 – Rush drummer Neal Peart is born 1967 – Whilst on their magical mystery jaunt around Britain, the Beatles’ psychedelic bus ends up causing a traffic jam. John Lennon tries to rectify the situation by tearing the signs off the side of the vehicle. 1970 – At the Hollywood Bowl, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, and others pay tribute to the late Woody Guthrie with a memorial concert. 1970 – In New Orleans, thieves steal $40,000 worth of Pink Floyd’s touring equipment. 1974 – Bob Dylan begins sessions for his album Blood on the Tracks. 1975 – Pink Floyd release Wish You Were Here. 1990 – Could this be the end of Fleetwood Mac? Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie both think so, as they announce they will no longer sing with the soft rockers. 1995 – Luciano Pavarotti is joined by U2 members Bono and the Edge, as well as singerproducer Brian Eno, in a benefit concert in Modena, Italy for the children of war-ravaged Bosnia. 1999 – A sold-out crowd of 23,000 people listen to Willie Nelson, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews Band, Deana Carter, and Neil Young perform at Farm Aid ’99. 2000 – The soundtrack to Cameron Crowe’s “Almost Famous” hits stores with something on it that no other soundtrack has ever had before: the authorized use of a vintage Led Zeppelin song. 2003 – Country music icon Johnny Cash dies at 1 a.m. ET of heart failure at Nashville’s Baptist Hospital, stemming from complications from diabetes. 2003 – The Beatles sue Apple computers, alleging their iTunes store infringes copyrights on the logo of their Apple Corps record label. 2004 – Red Hot Chili Peppers, Eddie Vedder, Henry Rollins and L.A. punk legends X play at a benefit tribute to the Ramones in Hollywood’s Avalon club. 2007 – The surviving members of Led Zeppelin announced they would reform for a star-studded tribute concert in London. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones would play at a show to remember the late Atlantic Records founder Ahmet Ertegun.

1943 – Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart is born 1953 – Styx guitarist Tommy Shaw is born in Montgomery, Ala. 1963 – In Los Angeles, fans can buy the unauthorized Bob Dylan release The Great White Wonder. It’s generally credited as the first bootleg album. 1964 – The Beatles play the Gator Bowl in Jacksonville, Fla. The band requests that the audience be desegregated. 1964 – The winner of a Mick Jagger impersonation contest held in Greenwich, England, reveals that he’s really Chris Jagger, the Rolling Stones frontman’s younger brother. 1967 – Fresh from the release of Sgt. Pepper, the Beatles head out in a psychedelic bus with their entourage to begin filming The Magical Mystery Tour. The bus goes on to visit the English towns of Somerset, Cornwall, Devon, and an airport in Kent. 1977 – David Bowie and Bing Crosby record a duet of “The Little Drummer Boy” for a Christmas television special. 1979 – The Who perform their first American gig without Keith Moon, who died a year ago. Face Kenny Jones sits in on drums when the band plays Passaic, N.J.’s Capitol Theatre. 1979 – On the first date of his American tour, Tom Petty unveils a banner asking “Why MCA?” Petty was complaining because his label Gone Gator had been sold to the industry giant. 1984 – Some 16,800 Bruce Springsteen fans cram Philadelphia’s Spectrum to see the Boss play the first of six nights. The show sets a new attendance record for the venue. 1995 – Green Day turn down an invitation to play Sesame Street because “we couldn’t handle a mosh pit full of 5-year-olds.” 1996 – Michael Hutchence of INXS pleads guilty to assaulting a photographer who lay in ambush for him outside a hotel where he was staying with Bob Geldof’s ex-wife Paula Yates. Hutchence is fined $600. 1996 – For the first time ever, a new single by a major recording artist is released exclusively on the Internet. David Bowie’s “Telling Lies” is released on Bowie’s Website (www.davidbowie.com), where it can be played and downloaded 1997 – John Lee Hooker receives a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. 2000 – The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland unveils the Jimi Hendrix Surround Sound Theater and Exhibit. 2003 – Currently in the midst of big autumn tours, Bruce Springsteen, Cher, Steely Dan and Fleetwood Mac refrain from playing on the second anniversary of the 9-11 attacks.

Not only do the band members host, but they also interview their special guests Manfred Mann, Goldie & the Gingerbreads, and the Preachers. The last were booked because Bill Wyman produced their current single. 1965 –It’s reported that manager Brian Epstein is negotiating rights for a Beatles cartoon series. 1966 – On this day The Beatles’ Revolver goes to No. 1 on the American albums chart and stays there for six weeks. 1966 – On TV tonight, the Rolling Stones make an appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Guitarist Brian Jones has his hand in a cast after falling over in Tangier. 1974 – The New York Dolls split up. 1975 –Kiss release their first live record, Alive. The double set also becomes their first top 10 album. 1988 Eric Clapton kicks off an American tour with Dire Straits guitarist Mark Knopfler. 1998 – The Beastie Boys are presented with the Video Vanguard Award at the 15th annual MTV Video Music Awards. 2006 - Metallica made an appearance on the season premiere of The Simpsons’ sixteenth season. 2007 – Pamela Anderson’s ex-husband Kid Rock was involved in an alleged assault on drummer Tommy Lee, (who was also married to the actress up until 1998).

Deadheads know him better as “Pigpen,” the keyboardist for the Grateful Dead. 1972 – Howlin’ Wolf headlines at the Ann Arbor Jazz & Blues Festival in Michigan. Other performers include Muddy Waters and Dr. John. 1972 – Neil Young’s girlfriend Carrie Snodgrass gives birth to the singer’s son, Zeke, in San Francisco. 1974 – No. 1 Chart Toppers Pop Hit: “I Shot the Sheriff,” Eric Clapton. The song is a remake of Jamaican Bob Marley’s reggae version. 1977 – Jimmy McCulloch quits Wings. The former Thunderclap Newman guitarist goes on to assist the Small Faces with their reunion tour. 1988 – Elton John clears out his closet, and ends up selling $6.2 million of costumes and concert props – including the enormous pair of boots he wore as the Pinball Wizard in Tommy – at a London auction. 2002: Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson began another job as an airline pilot with airline Astraeus, based in London. Dickinson would later fly Iron Maiden’s plane for their 2008 world tour documented in band’s documentary Flight 666. 2003 – A St. Paul, Minnesota jury deems Marilyn Manson not guilty of assault. He had been sued for damaged after rubbing his crotch against a security guard’s head during a 2000 concert. 2003 – David Bowie premieres his new album Reality in a live London performance that is broadcast to fans in movie theatres around the world. 2003 – Bruce Springsteen pays tribute to the late Warren Zevon at his Toronto show. The Boss plays Zevon’s “My Ride’s Here.” 2012 – Paul McCartney receives France’s highest public distinction. 1936 – Buddy Holly (Charles Hardin Holley) is born in Lubbock, Texas 1951 – Chrissie Hynde, the lead Pretender, is born in Akron, Ohio. 1954 – Benmont Tench, keyboardist with Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, is born in Gainesville, Fla. 1963 – The Rolling Stones’ first single, “Come On,” limps to No. 21. 1965 – Bob Dylan releases his single “Positively 4th Street.” 1968 – Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones and John Bonham made their live debut as Led Zeppelin at Teen Club Box 45 in Gladsaxe in Denmark. 1968 – The Doors played the first of two nights at The Roundhouse in London 1971 – David Bowie started recording sessions at Trident Studios in London. This became the concept album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars. 1973 – Elton John performs at the Hollywood Bowl, where he’s introduced by porn star Linda Lovelace. Relations between Waters, who left the band in 1983, and the other three had reached such a state that the ex-bassist threatened to sue promoters if the band played under the Floyd name. 1992 – Roger Waters releases his solo album Amused to Death 1997 – The Beatles’ longtime press officer Derek Taylor dies of cancer at age 65. 2003 – Singer/songwriter Warren Zevon dies in Los Angeles. He is 56. 2005 – New York rock club CBGB is served with an eviction notice by their landlord. 2007 – A new study revealed that rock stars were twice as likely to die early as the rest of us. Researchers said that the problem was so bad the industry should be labeled a “high risk” profession. 2010 – Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ was voted the greatest ‘lighter in the air song of all time’ by lighter company Zippo.

Hendrix then returns to London. 1971 – The Cranberries Dolores O’Riordan is born 1974 – Splinter’s The Place I Love album becomes the first release on George Harrison’s Dark Horse label 1975 – ‘Born to Run’ by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band is released. The video was initially banned by the music video station because it mentioned corporate sponsors like Pepsi, which the song was putting down. 1990 – Guitarist Tom Fogerty dies of respiratory failure from tuberculosis. 1994 – Pianist Nicky Hopkins dies at age 50 in London. Following his performance on the Rolling Stones’ Their Satanic Majesties Request, he became an in-demand session player, making appearances on albums by the Beatles, the Kinks, John Lennon, Rod Stewart, and even Spinal Tap. 1999 – Stone Temple Pilot Scott Weiland is sentenced to a year in jail for a probation violation. 2006 – For the first time in 30 years, Bob Dylan tops The Chart Toppers 200 with “Modern Times.”

There they will record their No. 1 single “Get Off of My Cloud.” 1966 – John Lennon flies to Germany to begin filming How I Won the War with director Richard Lester. He begins to wear the granny glasses of his character, Pvt. Gripweed. 1970 – Joe Cocker’s Mad Dogs & Englishmen album enters the charts. 1972 – At London’s Alexandra Palace you can see several avant-garde films by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. “Cold Turkey,” “The Ballad of John and Yoko,” “Give Peace a Chance,” “Instant Karma,” and “Up Your Leg” were all screened as part of the London Art Spectrum. 1981 – Bruce Springsteen joins the Pretenders onstage in Pasadena, Calif., to cover the Jackie Wilson classic “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher.” 1990 – B.B. It is the third marriage for the 40- year-old Indiana-born rocker and first for the 23-year-old model. 2000 – Oasis guitarist/songwriter Noel Gallagher splits with his wife, Meg Matthews, the inspiration for the song “Wonderwall.” 2003 – Greendale, the inscrutable Neil Young-directed film that accompanies Neil Young’s inscrutable concept album of the same name, premieres at the Toronto Film Festival. 2005 –Sheryl Crow announces she’s engaged to multiple Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong. 2008 - Ann & Nancy Wilson of Heart sent a cease-and-desist letter to John McCain’s campaign due to their usage of “Barracuda” in reference to McCain’s running mate Sarah Palin. The Wilson sisters didn’t have legal sending to send the letter due to the McCain campaign’s lawful purchase of rights to the song.

1946 – Quicksilver Messenger Service see two members born today. In San Diego, it’s guitarist Gary Duncan. At the Coronado Naval Air Station in California, it’s drummer Greg Elmore. 1951 – Martin Chambers, the original drummer with the Pretenders, is born in Hereford, England. 1960 – Kim Thayil, guitarist for the Seattle-based grunge-group, Soundgarden, is born in Seattle, Wash. 1962 – The Beatles record “Love Me Do” at Abbey Road studios in London. 1964 – The Animals give their debut U.S. performance at the Paramount Theater in Brooklyn, N.Y. 1965 – The Who stop by London’s Battersea Dog’s Home to buy a guard dog. When they come out, the quartet discover that their equipment van has been stolen. 1968 – The Rolling Stones’ latest single, “Street Fighting Man,” is banned in Chicago, where the Democratic National Convention is being held, because of its political content. 1970 – George Harrison releases “My Sweet Lord.” The song becomes his first solo No. 1 single, but in 1976, it’s declared that he subconsciously plagiarized the Chiffons’ “He’s So Fine.” 1971 – Paul McCartney tops the singles chart with “Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey.” 1980 – Yes sell out three nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden. This edition of the band boasts Chris Squire, Steve Howe, Alan White, Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn, but no Jon Anderson. 1986 – Gregg Allman is arrested on charges of drunk driving in Florida. He had only recently gotten his license back after a five-year suspension. 1996 – In 1996, Cat Stevens signed copies of his first album in 18 years. Most of the album was spoken-word and was titled, The Life of the Last Prophet. 1997 – After performing during the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show in New York, Pat Smear publicly announces that he will no longer be the guitarist for the Foo Fighters, and introduces Franz Stahl as his replacement. 2003 – Nineties hit-makers the Spin Doctors (“Two Princes”) announce their reformation. 2008 – The first guitar torched on stage by Jimi Hendrix sold for £280,000 at an auction of rock memorabilia. The Fender Stratocaster was burned at the end of a show at the Astoria in Finsbury Park, north London, in 1967.

1942 – Beach Boy Al Jardine is born rather far from the surf in Lima, Ohio. 1945 – Steppenwolf bassist (’69 to’72 & ’74 to ’76), George Biondi, enters the world. 1947- Eric Bell from Thin Lizzy is born 1955 – Sex Pistols guitarist Steve Jones is born in London. 1970 – Al “Blind Owl” Wilson of Canned Heat dies in Topanga Canyon, Calif. 1970 – According to Rolling Stone Bob Dylan’s “Great White Wonder” bootleg has sold more than 350,000 copies. 1970 – In divorce proceedings between Marianne Faithfull and her husband, John Dunbar, Mick Jagger is cited as a reason for their marriage’s deterioration. 1977 – Heart hits #11 with “Barracuda” 1982 – The three day US Festival in San Bernardino, California, was held in 1982. Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Browne, The Police, The Cars, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Eddie Money, Talking Heads, Tom Petty and others performed at the event organized by Apple Computers. 1989 – ‘Pump,’ the cornerstone album of Aerosmith’s post-sobriety renaissance, is released. 1999 – Bassist Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue is arrested at a show in Raleigh, N.C., on charges of inciting a riot at a Greensboro concert in October 1997. Sixx is charged with felony rioting and three misdemeanor charges of inciting a riot, assault, and disorderly conduct. 2003 – The Rolling Stones celebrate a year of being on the road promoting their 40 Licks compilation with a gig in Glasgow, Scotland. 2005 – Judas Priest tours Latin America. Whitesnake is the opening act. 2008 – Metallica have just premiered the video for their single “The Day That Never Comes” on their MySpace page. 2008 – Great White is trying to settle the lawsuits they face over the deadly Station Nightclub fire and in the process have put a price on the lives of the fans that died in the blaze at $10,000. 2010 - Electric Light Orchestra cellist Mike Edwards was killed when a cylindrical hay bale weighing 1,300 pounds rolled and collided with the van he was driving. Edwards was 62 years old.

1951 – Born on this day, Mik Kaminski, violin, Electric Light Orchestra 1957 – Born on this day, Steve Porcaro, Keyboards, Toto 1965 – The Rolling Stones appear on British TV’s Ready Steady Go! Mick Jagger and Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham perform a skit in which they duet on Sonny & Cher’s “I Got You Babe.” 1970 – Genesis run an advertisement for a drummer in the English magazine Melody Maker. Former child actor-turned-skins beater Phil Collins answers and convinces the band to hire him by revealing that he played bongos on George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. 1971 – The Rolling Stones are reported to be suing their former managers Andrew Loog Oldham and Eric Easton. The band accuses the pair of withholding royalties from it during its time on the Decca record label. 1971 – Former Grateful Dead manager Lenny Hart is arrested and charged with embezzling $70,000 from the band. The same day, the band release their second live album, titled Grateful Dead. 1975 –Some 500 ticketless fans hoping to see Jefferson Starship and the Doobie Brothers storm the gates of Syracuse, N.Y.’s Great American Music Fair. Rocks and bottles are thrown, and 60 people are eventually arrested. 1978 – George Harrison marries Olivia Trinidad Arias, a secretary with his Dark Horse record label. 1987 – The Amnesty International Tour starts in London, starring Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Peter Gabriel and Tracy Chapman. 1989 – The Cars’ Ric Ocasek marries supermodel Paulina Porizkova 1993 – At the MTV Video Music Awards, Neil Young joins Pearl Jam to perform “Rockin’ in the Free World.” 1995 – A seven-hour concert with dozens of stars, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Aretha Franklin and Bob Dylan, caps the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland. 2000 – Many fans leave a Def Leppard concert at the Oregon State Fair disappointed. The band was accused of playing too quietly, in order to obey local noise ordinances. 2003 – Punk legends the Clash receive a lifetime achievement award at the GQ Men of the Year awards in London. 2009 – Guy Babylon , keyboard player with the Elton John Band died of a heart attack while swimming in his pool at his home in Los Angeles, California.
