1943 – Joni Mitchell (Roberta Joan Anderson) is born in Fort McLeod, Alberta. 1960 – Born on this day, Tommy Thayer, lead guitarist, took over Ace Frehley’s character in Kiss of the ‘Spaceman.’ 1968 – At a Doors concert in Phoenix, Jim Morrison asks the audience to stand up. That’s enough for the local authorities to ban the group from the city. They suspected that Morrison was going to moon the audience as he had at a previous concert. 1971 – Born on this day, Robin Finck, American guitarist, Nine Inch Nails and Guns N’ Roses. 1974 – Ted Nugent wins the National Squirrel Shooting Archery Contest, according to Rolling Stone. Nugent successfully picked off one of the friendly rodents at a distance of 150 yards. 1988 – John Fogerty is victorious in the court case brought against him by Fantasy Records. The label, which owns his recordings with Creedence Clearwater Revival, alleged he plagiarized his own “Run Through the Jungle” on his 1985 hit “The Old Man Down the Road.” 1991: Frank Zappa was diagnosed with prostate cancer which was announced by his children Moon Unit & Dweezil. 2002 – A riot breaks out in Vancouver after Guns N’ Roses frontman Axl Rose fails to appear for the kickoff show on the band’s first North American tour since 1993. It is an ill-omen for the tour, which stutters to an abrupt halt with the cancellation of all remaining dates a month later. 2003 – Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour is made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II. 2003 – The Rolling Stones play Hong Kong for the first time, headlining a concert to quell fears of a SARS epidemic. Reuters reports The Stones and Neil Young charged such high fees for their appearances that it will cost Hong Kong taxpayers over $100 million. 2006 – Genesis announce their reunion with Phil Collins.
