1956 – Johnny Rotten (John Lydon) of the Sex Pistols is born.
1964 – Born on this day, Jeff Hanneman, guitar, Slayer.
1967 – The Beatles spent a second day at Knole Park, Sevenoaks, Kent, England to complete filming for the ‘Strawberry Fields Forever’ promotional video.
1967 – Born on this day, Chad Channing, Nirvana’s first drummer, left the band in 1990. Has since worked with The Methodists, East of the Equator and Redband.
1978 – Talking Heads made their UK TV debut on the ‘The Old Grey Whistle Test’.
1978 – Blood, Sweat & Tears sax player Greg Herbert dies in Amsterdam from an accidental overdose at age 30.
1985 - John Fogerty performed in public for the first time in fourteen years in LA
1987 - Genesis peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart with “Land of Confusion” which was their fourth top ten single in the U.S.
1998 – Jersey stalwarts Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi and Southside Johnny perform at the Come Together benefit concert.
2007 – Jim Morrison was enlisted to help fight global warming more than 35 years after his death. ‘Woman in the Window’, a previously unreleased poem written and recorded by The Doors frontman shortly before he died in 1971 was being set to music and used to publicise the Global Cool campaign.
2011 – Ozzy, the madman of rock and reality TV star cancelled a Tour show in Reno, Nevada, Sunday night due to a “sudden illness,” reported concert promoter.
2017 - John Wetton, who played bass guitar in King Crimson, Uriah Heep and Roxy Music before fronting supergroup Asia, died at the age of 67 after a battle with colon cancer.

1947 – Singer David Byron of the rock band Uriah Heep is born in Essex.
1952 – Ramones drummer Tommy Ramone is born in Budapest, Hungary.
1961 -  Born on this day, Eddie Jackson, Queensryche.
1961 – Bob Dylan performs at Izzy Young’s Folklore Centre. That night he meets his hero Woody Guthrie at a friend’s house in East Orange, N.J.
1964 – In Paris, the Beatles record German versions of their hits, including “Komm, Gib Mir Deine Hand” and “Sie Liebt Dich.”
1967 – Over at London’s Saville Theatre, Jimi Hendrix, the Who, the Koobas, and the Thoughts perform.
1967 – At the end of tonight’s Sunday Night at the London Palladium, a British variety TV show, comedians Peter Cook and Dudley Moore appear with paper cut-outs of the Rolling Stones to wave at the audience from a revolving stage. The gag refers to the Rolling Stones refusal to take part in the traditional farewell during their appearance on the show last week.
1969 - Fleetwood Mac had their only UK No.1 single with the instrumental ‘Albatross.’
1972 – The triple album ‘The Concert For Bangla Desh’ went to No.1 on the UK album chart.
1983 – Stevie Nicks marries Kim Anderson in Los Angeles. They split in 1984.
1991 – The Stone Roses attack the offices of their former record company, Revolver Records. During the fracas, Revolver Records MD Paul Birch, his girlfriend and his Mercedes are doused in paint by the English group, who are angry over the unauthorized re-release of their old material.
1999 – Hole are among the performers at the Big Day Out festival in Adelaide, Australia. However, their set is cut short when Courtney Love howls, “An Australian bug just bit me really hard. I’m not joking. I’m gonna die.
2006 – Bryan Adams plays for 10,000 screaming fans in Karachi, Pakistan to benefit earthquake relief.
2010 - Pete Townshend's 2003 child pornography scandal came back to haunt him just days before he was to perform during the half-time show at The Super Bowl in Miami, Florida. Protect Our Children officials distributed flyers to local homes, warning parents that The Who's guitarist admitted using his credit card to view images on a child porn website. Townshend was placed on a British sex offenders list following his arrest, but was not convicted after protesting that he was only researching a book.
2016 - Three weeks after his death, David Bowie had twelve albums in the UK top 40, equalling a record set by Elvis Presley in 1977.

1943 – Guitarist Dick Taylor is born in Dartford, original bassist with the Rolling Stones.
1949 – Drummer Eddie Bayers, who has played with Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, is born.
1963 – The Rolling Stones record five tracks with producer Glyn Johns in their efforts to interest a label.
1965 – The Who appear on the British TV show Ready Steady Go! for the first time. An enthusiastic response for their performance of “I Can’t Explain” is assured, as managers Kit Lambert and Pete Stamp have packed the audience with their hardcore mod following.
1966 – The Cavern Club in Liverpool closes, having run up debts of 10,000 pounds. The club became world famous as one of the Beatles’ earliest venues.
1968 – Jim Morrison of The Doors was arrested and charged with public drunkenness after harassing a security guard at a Las Vegas adult movie theatre.
1969 – After the Beatles cut versions of “Get Back” and “Don’t Let Me Down” for single release, John Lennon and Yoko Ono meet Allen Klein for the first time at London’s Dorchester Hotel.
1978 – A fan asks Ted Nugent to sign his arm. With a Bowie knife. Nugent obliges. Controversy ensues.
1978 – The Fleetwood Mac album ‘Rumours’ went to No.1 on the UK album chart, also a No.1 in the US.
1982 – Jackson Browne and Lynne Sweeney have their first child, Ryan Daniel Browne.
1983 – The greatest British rock ‘n’ roller ever, Billy Fury, dies in a London hospital after collapsing at his home. He had suffered from heart trouble.
1985 – More than 40 artists gather at A&M’s Hollywood studios to record “We Are the World” under the collective name “USA for Africa."
1988 – To promote the latest leg of their Momentary Lapse of Reason tour, Pink Floyd float a giant inflatable bed down the Thames.
1994 – Paul and Linda McCartney attended the premiere of Wayne’s World II in London. The couple then went on to Hard Rock CafĂ©, where the film star Mike Myers presented them with a cheque for LIPA (the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) for £25,000 ($42,500) from the sale of Linda’s vegetarian burgers.
1995 – Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page turns up at a Black Crowes show in London. Page plays with the band in Paris on February 4 and in 1999 they both embark on a world tour that ends when Page puts out his back.
2005 – Nickelback’s Ryan Vikedal, drummer with the Vancouver rockers since 1996, leaves the band.
2005 – Legendary rock drummer Jim Capaldi with U.K. folk-prog legends Traffic, dies after a brief fight with stomach cancer. He is 60-years-old.
2009 – Lynyrd Skynyrd keyboard player Billy Powell died at the age of 56 of a suspected heart attack in Florida.
2016 - 74-year-old Paul Kantner, founding member, guitarist and vocalist for Jefferson Airplane and later Starship, died after suffering a heart attack earlier in the week.

1930 – The great blues singer Bobby “Blue” Bland is born in Rosemark, Tenn.
1945 – Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason is born in Birmingham, England.
1951 – Thin Lizzy drummer Brian Downey is born in Dublin.
1951 – J. Geils Band keyboardist Seth Justman is born in Washington, D.C.
1964 – The Rolling Stones appear on British television’s Juke Box Jury, where they pass judgment on that week’s single releases.
1967 – The Beatles sign a new, 9-year contract with EMI.
1968 – Faith No More vocalist Mike Patton is born in Eureka, Calif.
1971 – David Bowie arrives for his first visit to the U.S. He does not perform, but receives much publicity for wearing dresses in Texas and Louisiana.
1976 – David Bowie sues his former attorney, alleging that Michael Lippan took a 15 percent agent’s fee instead of the customary 10 percent. Bowie’s suit also claims that after his dismissal, Lippan withheld $475,000 in earnings from the singer.
1990 – In honour of one of its most famous sons, Gainesville, Fla., declares today Tom Petty Day.
1997 – At the American Music Awards, starchy crooner Pat Boone reveals his new “metal” direction, wearing leathers and a studded collar. His weekly Gospel America TV show is cancelled. Says Boone, “I’m not going to apologize; I’ve been one of the biggest squares of all time. Now I’m being judged like I used to judge these rockers, but God loves rockers too!”
2005 – R.E.M. are forced to cancel a gig for the first time since 1995 when their crew and gear is held at the Estonian/Russia border. The band were due to play St. Petersburg.
2011 –Police filed charges against the adoptive son of Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour on Thursday for his role in last month’s violent protest against the Government university fees policy.
2014 - Pete Seeger, the banjo-picking troubadour who introduced generations of Americans to their Folk Music heritage, died of natural causes at the age of 94.
2015 - Black Sabbath bassist, 65-year-old Geezer Butler, was arrested in California after a bar fight following an argument that escalated into a physical confrontation.

1950 – Paul Pena, a blues musician who wrote Steve Miller’s hit “Jet Airliner" is born.
1955 – Edward Lodewijk “Eddie” Van Halen is born this joyful day.
1965 - During a Rolling Stones tour of Australia and New Zealand, guitarist Keith Richards had his shirt torn off after 50 fans invaded the stage during the gig.
1966 – The Animals’ Eric Burdon sings lead vocals for Manfred Mann at a London concert.
1967 – In the Village Voice today, you can read Jack Newfield’s article “Brecht of the Jukebox, Poet of the Electric Guitar” about Bob Dylan.
1969 – In the midst of recording Let It Be at the Apple Studios, the Beatles lay down a series of rock ‘n’ roll covers, including “Shake Rattle And Roll,”
1969 – Led Zeppelin play a four-hour set at the Boston Tea Party.
1970 – John Lennon writes and records “Instant Karma” with producer Phil Spector.
1973 – Sweet were at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Blockbuster’. The groups only UK No.1 of 15 Top 40 hits.
1974 – The Doobie Brothers open their first European tour at The Rainbow in London.
1975 – The BBC shows a documentary on David Bowie called “Cracked Actor.”
1977 – Peter Green, one of Fleetwood Mac’s founding guitarists, is committed to an English mental institution. Cause? He fired a pistol at a messenger who was trying to deliver a check for his portion of song royalties.
1977 – Patti Smith falls off stage whilst opening for Bob Seger in Tampa, Fla.
1986 – Allen Collins from Lynyrd Skynyrd crashed his car, paralysing him from the waist down and killing his girlfriend Debra Jean Watts.
1991 – Queen had their second UK No.1 with ‘Innuendo’.
1997 – ZZ Top, James Brown and the Blues Brothers perform at the Super Bowl XXXI halftime show.
2000 – Rage Against the Machine try to force their way into the New York Stock Exchange. The stunt was part of a video the radical band was shooting in Wall Street with filmmaker Michael Moore for their song “Sleep Now in the Fire.”
2000 – Courtney Love gets into a fight with a photographer at the Sundance Film Festival.
2003 – Billy Joel was airlifted to hospital after his car smashed into a tree.
2004 - Sex Pistols singer John Lydon appeared on the U.K. reality show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me out Of Here set in the Australian outback. Lydon left after four days earning $42,500 to appear on the programme.
2006 – Babyshambles singer/addict and occasional Kate Moss squeeze Pete Doherty is arrested twice in one day for suspicion of possessing drugs.
2007 – The Rolling Stones topped the US music rich list for the second year running after making $150.6m (£76.2m) in 2006.

1958 - Gary Tibbs, bassist with art rockers Roxy Music, punk rockers the Vibrators and new wavers Adam + the Ants, is born.
1961 – On his second day in New York, Bob Dylan hunts down his hero Woody Guthrie’s family in Howard Beach. He teaches Woody’s son Arlo some rudimentary harmonica.
1963 – Janis Joplin performs in San Francisco for the first time, singing at the North Beach coffee house.
1969 – ‘Proud Mary’, the Creedence Clearwater Revival LP, is released. “Proud Mary” eventually reaches #2 on the charts. Later, Immortalized by Ike and Tina Turner.
1971 – Jefferson Airplane’s Grace Slick and Paul Kantner have a daughter, whom they name China.
1971 – Beatles-inspired nutcase Charles Manson is sentenced to life imprisonment after being found guilty of seven counts of murder in the first degree and one count of conspiracy to commit murder. Three other members of his family are also given life sentences.
1980 – Following his prison ordeal in Tokyo after he was busted with a half-pound of marijuana, Paul McCartney is released and flies from Japan to … Amsterdam.
1983 – The Allman Brothers bassist Lamar Williams died of cancer age 36.
1984 – Yoko Ono donated £250,000 ($425,000) to Liverpool old people’s home Strawberry Fields.
1986 – Bob Dylan’s one-time manager Albert Grossman dies of a heart attack while flying to London.
1991 – Paul McCartney records a performance for MTV’s Unplugged.
2000 – “Deep Purple In Concert With The London Symphony Orchestra Conducted By Paul Mann,” a double live CD of Deep Purple’s orchestral concerts at London’s Royal Albert Hall on Sept. 25 and 26 is released in the U.K.
2006 – Immortal hair rockers Motley Crue receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

1947 – Warren Zevon is born in Chicago.
1949 – Saturday Night Live comedian John Belushi is born in Chicago.
1958 – Elvis Presley was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Jailhouse Rock’.
1958 – The Quarry Men performed at the Cavern Club, in Liverpool, (this was the bands only performance at the club). It was three years later when they appeared again at the Cavern but under their new name as The Beatles.
1962 – Brian Epstein signs a management contract with the Beatles.
1969 – Jethro Tull play America for the first time. They open up for Led Zeppelin in New York City.
1969 – New Jersey state prosecutors issue a warning to US record dealers that they would be charged with distributing pornography if they were caught selling the John Lennon / Yoko Ono LP ‘Two Virgins’.
1974 – Born on this day, Christopher River Hesse, drummer, Hoobastank.
1976 – Bob Dylan started a five-week run at No.1 on the US album chart with ‘Desire’ his third US No.1.
1977 – Appearing at the Roxy, London, The Buzzcocks supported by Chelsea.
1980 – In Los Angeles, a billboard is put up advertising Pink Floyd’s The Wall. Every day a brick is added to the billboard until the entire space is covered.
1981 – Steve Tyler of Aerosmith was hospitalised after being involved in a crash on his motorbike.
1992 – Nirvana played their first ever show in Australia at the Phoenician Club in Sydney. Also on the bill, Tumbleweed and The Meanies.
1993 – Keith Richards plays Las Vegas for the first time with his solo group the X-Pensive Winos.
1995 – Balance (Van Halen) is released.
1999 – The Offspring went to No.1 on the UK singles chart with ‘Pretty Fly, For A White Guy’.
2000 – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young play the first date of their reunion tour at Michigan’s Palace of Auburn Hills. It’s the first time they’ve toured together in 25 years.
2001 – AC/DC postpone their date in Adelaide, Australia after drummer Phil Rudd is diagnosed with a minor kidney infection.
2003 – With three trophies, Avril Lavigne tops the fan-voted MTV Asia Awards at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
2017 - Butch Trucks, a drummer and founding member of The Allman Brothers Band, passed away at the age of 69. His real name was Claude Hudson Trucks.
