1947 – Vocalist/organist Mark Stein of Vanilla Fudge is born in Bayonne, N.J.
1948 – George Kooymans (Golden Earring) is born this day.
1964 – Vinnie Paul from Pantera is born.
1967 – Beatles music publisher Dick James announces that “Yesterday” is the most covered song of all time, with 446 versions.
1970 – The world’s greatest rock ‘n’ roll movie, Jean-Luc Godard’s One Plus One, starring the Rolling Stones, opens in the U.S. The obtuse film features Godard’s trademark Marxist lecturing interspersed with scenes of the Stones composing “Sympathy for the Devil.
1970 – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young win a Grammy, Best New Artists.
1971 –  Jim Morrison The Doors Lead Singer booked into The Hotel George’s in Paris.
1972 - Harry Nilsson was at No.1 on the UK singles chart with his version of The Peter Ham and Tom Evans song 'Without You'.
1974 – An insurance company pays out $112,000 on Janis Joplin’s life insurance policy following her accidental overdose in 1970.
1975 – Mick Jagger stops by Los Angeles’ Record Plant studios and ends up getting involved in a jam session with Wings and Ronnie Wood.
1977 – Billy Idol’s Generation X play a concert at Leicester University in England that ends in violence when a glass is broken over bassist Bob Andrews’ head.
1982 – Jimmy Page releases his first solo album, the soundtrack to Death Wish II.
1992 – Eric Clapton records an episode of MTV Unplugged. The subsequent record becomes one of the best-selling of his career.
1995 – At the Grammys this evening, Sheryl Crow is awarded Song of the Year for “All I Wanna Do” and is named Best New Artist.
1997 – Former Fab Four member Paul McCartney is officially knighted by Queen Elizabeth II during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
2003 – Ticketmaster sell a record 1 million tickets in a single day, as shows for the Dixie Chicks and Bruce Springsteen go on sale.
2003 – AC/DC: To celebrate their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, AC/DC play a one-off show at New York’s Roseland Ballroom.
2008 – As fans around the world await a follow up to 2003’s St. Anger, Metallica is eyeing September as the release date for their new album.
2009 – People tried to gate crash an Iron Maiden concert in Bogota. Colombian police arrested more than 100 people after stones were thrown hours before the group were due to perform.
2011 – Owsley “Bear” Stanley, a 1960s counterculture icon who worked with The Grateful Dead and was a prolific LSD producer, died in a car crash in Australia.
2016 - 71-year-old Keith Emerson, keyboardist and founding member of the Progressive Rock band Emerson, Lake And Palmer, died at his Santa Monica, California home from a self-inflicted gunshot to his head.
